In 1996 Bruce Emmel was introduced by his wife, Audrey, to a man who had Cerebral Palsy and was mostly confined to a wheelchair. They shared an interest in horses, country and bluegrass gospel music and would often get together. Bruce learned about his friend’s frustration, that there were no local Personal Care Providers in Clearwater or Beltrami Counties. He also asked Bruce to start a Personal Care agency. As a follower of Jesus Christ, Bruce believed strongly that his Christian faith should be lived out and not just talked about. Many parts of the Bible talk about care providing, in fact the New Testament book of James is a reference book for many long term care providers. One verse in the Bible, James 1:27, clearly states; “Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.” So in 2006, with the likeminded support of this individual, family, friends, Nancy Campbell (the first nurse and eventual business partner) and by the grace of God, Home at Heart Care began. With an aging population and increased support for independent living among Minnesota’s Disabled population, long term care needs have never been so great in the remote areas of Northern Minnesota. More than 25 years ago, Minnesota’s citizens recognized this need and created Home and Community Based Services. The Personal Care Program, Homemaking and In-Home Respite programs that Home at Heart began to provide in July of 2006 evolved out of Medicaid funded Home and Community Based Services. By participating in these programs we are able to provide a fair wage to our employees and still practice our faith. Home at Heart Care is a for profit company that believes in investing its profits back into people. One important way to do this is through training, with a variety of paid training opportunities each year. Home at Heart exceeds state minimum PCA pay and benefit requirements with overtime over 40 hours and Christmas Bonuses to eligible employees.  Charitable giving is a big part of our philosophy as well. We invest in like-minded faith partners such as the Clear Waters Life Center in Clearbrook, who, in exchange, provide an excellent Employee Assistance program to Home at Heart employees. We strongly support charities such as the Relay for Life and Food Shelves, also Bemidji’s Oak Hills Christian College, Mokahum Indian Ministries in Cass Lake, New Life Bible Camp in Kittson County and an Orphanage Project in Ukraine. MISSION STATEMENT Our name is an acronym of our MISSION STATEMENT.
