March 17, 2018 marks the 30th year anniversary for WEST Consultants! WEST Consultants, Inc. (WEST), is a firm dedicated to providing specialized water resources engineering services relevant to Water, Environment, Sedimentation, and Technology. WEST personnel are recognized as computer modeling experts in hydrology, hydraulics, geomorphology, sediment transport, and water quality. Accordingly, WEST is known for the development of innovative computer modeling tools, expertise in complex modeling situations, and the conduct of effective professional training courses. Through the years, WEST’s technical services have also broadened to best serve our clients. We now offer hydro-meteorological sciences, flow measurement and hydrologic data collection, and irrigation and drainage engineering. In 2017 we added Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) services to our offerings. The firm’s portfolio of projects spans across six continents and includes some of the most significant rivers in the world. Notable projects include hydrologic and hydraulic modeling in support of the Columbia River Treaty; implementation of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Corps Water Management System in multiple watersheds; geomorphic analysis for the Fargo, ND / Moorhead, MN Flood Risk Management Project; and thousands of additional hydraulic analysis and design projects including transportation, flood risk assessment and mitigation, and environmental impact assessment and restoration. Water is an increasingly precious commodity. Now, more than ever, it is necessary for us to balance the water resource needs between man and the environment; effectively assess and manage flood and drought risks from changing climate conditions; and to optimize water allocations to counteract water scarcity and diminishing water supplies to address ever increasing demand. Clients choose WEST because they trust us to serve them well.” His presentation, “What is the International Commission on Large Dams Doing about Reservoir Sedimentation?”, will describe the activities and direction of ICOLD on this important topic, including recent and bulletins and those currently in preparation. Mr. Teal currently chairs the ICOLD Committee on Sedimentation of Reservoirs and will also lead that committee’s meeting at the 26th Congress – 86th Annual Meeting in July 2018 in Vienna, Austria. WEST Vice President, Brian Wahlin, Ph.D., P.E., D.WRE represented the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) at the Water for Food International Forum. Dr. Wahlin, also Vice President of ICID and President of the U.S. Committee on Irrigation and Drainage (USCID), represented ICID at the “Water for Food International Forum, Farmer-led Irrigated Agriculture: Seeds of Opportunity” held January 29-30, 2018 at the World Bank Conference Center in Washington, D.C. The conference was convened by the Robert B. Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute at the University of Nebraska and the World Bank, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the U.S. Agency for International Development. The forum, attended by participants from over 30 countries, focused on improving water and food security and livelihoods for smallholder farmers in developing countries by increasing and expanding sustainable irrigated agriculture. Presenters and participants explored the investments needed and the necessary enabling environment for enhanced agricultural production, including strong partnerships, linkages to markets support, capacity and technical training, and the role of the private and public sectors.
