We space posts 7ft on center – most companies do 8ft. This helps give the fence more strength and keeps rails from sagging. We sink our posts into the ground 1/3 the height of the fence (2ft for a 6ft fence, 2.66ft for an 8ft fence), add gravel to the bottom of the post holes for drainage, and surround each post with 60-80lbs of concrete. The concrete is graded away from posts to help keep water from seeping in. All of this makes for extremely sturdy posts that will not rot prematurely.
We use GripRite Exterior Screws to fasten stringers to posts, and pickets to stringers. Most companies use galvanized nails, and this is fine. We prefer screws because they provide a tighter fit, a neater appearance, and the ability to be removed without damaging the surrounding material.
A properly installed wooden fence will last for 20+ years with minimal maintenance. Fences can be stained and sealed after they weather for a season or two which will help keep the fence looking great, but it is not necessary for durability. Fences can and should be pressure washed to remove mold and mildew every 5 years or so. If erosion causes dirt to touch the pickets over time, the dirt should be removed to keep pickets free from ground contact.
Weekend Wooden Fences, LLC
Weekend Wooden Fences began in 2017 with a mission to provide Okaloosa County residents with a reliable, professional, customer-focused fencing contractor.
everal local fencing contractors and did not even get a call back from most of them. And the ones that bothered to respond, either didn’t come out to provide a quote or didn’t follow through once I approved the quote.
It was surprising, to say the least. I assumed that these contractors were either too busy, the job was too small, or maybe, they just didn’t want my business.
Regardless of the reason, I was fed up, and decided to build my own fence. My neighbors were so impressed that I decided to start a weekend business to help those in the same situation.
