Wayne Patton Realty has been in the real estate services business in the greater Fort Walton Beach area since 1951. Bob is preceded in death by his parents Ray and Iva Gates, brothers, Ellis and Donald, and sister, Dorothy. Funeral services will be entrusted to Emerald Coast Funeral Home. The family wishes to thank all the people that provided care and comfort to our father. Visitation will be on Wednesday, Aug. 13, at 10 a.m., followed by a funeral mass at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Beal Memorial Cemetery. He graduated from the University of Scranton, Scranton, Pa., in 1938, with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry and in 1939 was awarded a bachelor's degree in education from the same university. In May 1940 he entered the U.S. Army Air Corps and after completing primary and basic flying training at Parks Air College, East St. Louis, Ill., and Randolph Field, Texas, was commissioned a second lieutenant and received his pilot wings at Kelly Field, Texas, in December 1940. His first assignment as a commissioned pilot was at Clark Field in the Philippine Islands. He was stationed at Nichols Field, Manila, when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and the Philippine Islands. During the early years of World War II, as a combat fighter pilot in northern Australia, Java and the Philippines, General Kruzel flew P-40 fighters, downed one Japanese Zero fighter and logged 175 combat hours. ; then the AF sent me to U of Michigan for two years to earn a Business Degree, followed by three years in the Pentagon. After the war I was sent back to school at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for a Masters Degree in Management. This was followed by three years at CINCPAC Headquarters in Hawaii. One year later I retired from the AF and moved back to Fort Walton Beach, Following our AF career, Carol and I became involved in the Fort Walton Beach area as REALTORS. In 1976, I and five partners (Wayne Parsley, Irene Alexander, Billie Mae Cresse, Bob Gates and George Bishop) bought the Wayne Patton Agency. Wayne Patton was medically retired from the AF in the late 1940’s after crashing into the Eglin AFB library in a P-51. After a long recuperation Wayne started his Fort Walton Beach business career by opening a hot dog stand near Cinco Bridge. In 1951 he started Wayne Patton Realty.
