Various contact lens designs are available for different vision problems. Spherical contact lenses correct nearsightedness or farsightedness and are indicated by a minus or plus in your prescription, respectively. Bifocal contact lenses are similar to multifocal eyeglasses in that they use different optical zones to correct presbyopia (the age-related, decreased ability see at both near and far distances). Toric contact lenses correct astigmatism, which can accompany either nearsightedness or farsightedness. Many lens designs come in colors that can enhance or change your natural eye color. There are many types of contact lenses available, including hard lenses, soft lenses and GP lenses. Hard lenses, made from Lucite or Plexiglas are only rarely used. Soft lenses are the most common choice and are composed of a gel-like water containing plastic. GP lenses are recommended for people with severe astigmatism and presbyopia. They are made from a rigid plastic and are oxygen permeable. Many kids are active in sports. Contact lenses offer several advantages over glasses for these activities. Contacts don't fog up, get streaked with perspiration or get knocked off like glasses can. They also provide better peripheral vision than glasses, which is important for nearly every sport. There are even contact lenses with special tints to help your child see the ball easier. If your young son or daughter is nearsighted, rigid gas permeable (GP) contacts may be the best choice. In some cases, GP contact lenses may slow the progression of myopia in children. (Soft lenses don't offer this potential benefit.)
