Atlas’ operations encompass more than 90 facilities and 10,000 employees worldwide. Its businesses are engaged in a wide range of industries, including building products, business services, capital equipment, chemicals, foundry, industrial distribution, metal fabrication and forming, packaging, pulp and paper, transportation and logistics, waste management and wood products. As the need for U.S. infrastructure improvement continues to grow, the opportunities for Veritas Steel will too. With Atlas behind us and a renewed commitment to our customers and business partners, we look forward to new challenges while honoring the memories and accomplishments of the past. We build bridges that connect complex transportation systems and serve the economic and personal needs of our society. We are committed to providing bridges that meet or exceed our customers’ needs in a safe, timely and cost-effective manner. We take great pride in the bridges we build: We are committed to working safely by keeping physically and mentally fit. We perform our jobs to the best of our ability every day. We do NOT compromise safety. We are committed to producing high-quality products that exceed our customers' expectations. We are committed to open, honest, fair and consistent communication with actions that match what we say. We are committed to effectively prioritizing and organizing our work, and to being on time. We are dedicated, disciplined and loyal to the organization. We are in control by planning and being prepared (“PLTW”) to its students. PLTW, a nonprofit organization, has created an exceptional model for providing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) instruction and it is already being taught in 8,000 schools across the country, benefitting nearly 2 million children. This partnership with PLTW, Orange Park High School and the city of Orange Park is a unique opportunity for our company -- and for all of us personally -- to make a profound impact on our community. to provide “one of a kind” STEM learning experiences for K-12 students and teachers in the communities where Atlas associates live and where our kids go to school. Through courses in computer science, engineering and biomedical science, students learn problem-solving skills, critical and creative thinking and how to communicate and collaborate with one another. The PLTW curriculum inspires students to love the very types of subjects --- and pursue the very types of careers -- that serve as the backbone of our company. ” -- that we’re making available to Orange Park High School: Orange Park High School serves approximately 1500 students. 63 incoming freshmen have requested the Introduction to Engineering course for 2016-17 school year. In this beginning class students will primarily focus on Mechanical Engineering and the properties of design, including studying simple machines, hydraulics and basic structures such as bridges. The funding provided through the PLTW grant will help provide meaningful hands-on experiences to solidify their understanding of engineering fundamentals. For example, a team of students will be given the task of building a chair with specific parameters out of 7 cardboard boxes that must hold one of their team members! During their second and third year students will study civil and architectural engineering which will prepare them to be college and career ready. At the end of the 3 year program students will earn industry certifications in Revit and InVentor which will make them very marketable for the workforce in Northeast Florida. Alan has 24 years of financial management experience, including 16 years of executive leadership. Prior to Veritas, he was CFO of PDM Bridge and also served as CFO of RoadSafe Traffic Systems Inc. from 2007 to 2011. Alan has also held positions with NES Rental Holdings Inc., Publications International Ltd., and the Clorox Company. He earned a B.S. in business administration from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. VP of Business Development The initial design criteria included provisions to accommodate a future trolley on the bridge, using minimally invasive work with light-duty construction equipment. While this was a relatively simple concept on the plate girder approaches, applying the same concept to the arch spans was more complicated due to the transverse floor beam and longitudinal stringer framing layout. The localized slab depth required to accommodate the trolley was nearly 16 in. thick, which would require an undesirable large haunch or make the floor beams noncomposite with the deck. The team initially decided that the longitudinal stringers would sit on top of the transverse floor beams, making them noncomposite. In addition, the look of the inclined basket-handled arches that were touching at the peak appealed to stakeholders. To meet vertical clearance on the roadway and have the arch ribs touch at the peak, the initial geometry of the arch ribs was set to tilt inward at a 25° angle from vertical. The hangers are 23∕8-in.-diameter ASTM A586 bridge strand and are made with Grade 2 wire as opposed to Grade 1, and a Class C coating was applied to all wires in the strand to enhance durability. The strength of a hanger using Grade 1 wire with Class A coating is 344 tons, while Grade 2 wire with Class C coating throughout provides a capacity of 357 tons and was tested to failure at 395 tons.
