The Fine Arts Gallery features a robust rotation of exhibitions of student artwork in all media. Open every day except Saturday, the gallery sometimes displays the work of visiting artists and professors, who also provide lectures and guest studios. The Jim and Joyce Faulkner Performing Arts Center provides a new home for performing arts on campus. Located next to the Arkansas Union in the renovated Historic Field House, the 600-seat facility opened in late 2015. Founded in 1871 as a land-grant college and state university, the University of Arkansas established its campus on a hilltop overlooking the Ozark Mountains. There were few facilities and little money that first academic year, but the eight students and three faculty members who gathered for classes in 1872 showed the same dedication to learning and commitment to excellence that has carried the University of Arkansas into the 21st century. More than 140 years later, the university’s enrollment is more than 27,000 and its students represent all 50 states and 120 countries. The university is the state’s foremost partner and resource for education and economic development. It serves as the major provider of graduate-level instruction in Arkansas. And its public service activities reach every county in Arkansas, throughout the nation, and around the world. The Arkansas Research and Technology Park, managed by the University of Arkansas, has helped three dozen promising tech firms get started, firms that have created nearly 350 jobs that pay an average salary of $80,000 each annually. The University of Arkansas Community Design Center's design proposal for the Trailhead Complex at the Maumelle River Nature Center won the 2013 Unbuilt Architecture and Design Award from the Boston Society of Architects. The National Science Foundation provided a grant to research plant fungi that cause disease on the leaves of crops such as corn, sorghum and soybean and the strategies they use to infect the plant. HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS Over the course of its history, the university has continued to bring the citizens of the state together by raising educational standards, improving business and economy, and giving Arkansans a hardy mascot around which to rally. Over the course of the spring and summer, more and more students found their way to Fayetteville. Most of them lacked the preparatory coursework needed to pursue higher education, so the university provided both preparatory coursework and curriculum for a college degree. By the 1920s, however, leaders recognized the need to give the campus a more formal, collegiate look. An architectural firm in St. Louis, Jamieson & Spearl, developed a campus plan that called for demolition of every existing building, including Old Main, and development of a new set of buildings.
