Who We Are Founded in Michigan in 1959, Trout Unlimited today is a national non-profit organization with about 300,000 members and supporters dedicated to conserving, protecting and restoring North America's coldwater fisheries and their watersheds. Our staff and volunteers work from coast to coast to protect, reconnect, restore and sustain trout and salmon habitat on behalf of today's anglers and coming generations of sportsmen and women who value the connection between healthy, intact habitat and angling opportunity. From the beginning, TU was guided by the principle that if we "take care of the fish, then the fishing will take care of itself." And that principle was grounded in science. "One of our most important objectives is to develop programs and recommendations based on the very best information and thinking available," said TU's first president, Dr. Casey E. Westell Jr. "In all matters of trout management, we want to know that we are substantially correct, both morally and biologically." From its hundreds of local stream restoration projects, to helping lead the way to remove the Edwards Dam on the Kennebec River in Maine, to compelling Congress to strengthen the Clean Water Act, TU has a strong 50 year track record of conservation achievements. Perhaps TU's greatest strength is that it works at multiple levels of society and government to achieve its mission. From the landowner on the stream bank, to the state fisheries agency, to the Halls of Congress, TU is working to achieve its vision. As a nonprofit organization, Trout Unlimited is a group organized for purposes other than generating profit and in which no part of the organization's income is distributed to its members, directors, or officers. The collected income supports projects that conserve, protect, and restore Northern America's trout and salmon fisheries and their watersheds, rather than pay dividends to investors. TU is registered as a nonprofit and therefore is eligible for certain programs including grants, government surplus and tax exemptions. This section provides organizational information as well as documentation that governs the operation and activities of TU. TU uses cookies to administer our web site. When you submit a web form for membership, donation and event registration purposes, unique identifiers (member numbers) are assigned to your record in our database. These nine-digit TU Member Numbers are used to verify your identity and for use as account numbers in our membership database. Financial information that is collected on all web forms is used to bill the user for requested products and services. All email addresses collected from our websites are for TU's use only, and will not be shared, rented or sold. TU will not engage members for solicitation of a product or service via email, and under no circumstances will TU make a member's email address or phone number available to outside parties. Occasionally, TU conducts online surveys and asks site visitors for their contact information. We use data from our surveys for internal use only and for the sole purpose of improving member services and advancing our mission. Once joining Trout Unlimited, we may occasionally rent member data, limited to name and physical address, to other companies that offer value-added services to our members. TU occasionally rents or exchanges physical mailing lists in order to: raise significant unrestricted revenue to help support our conservation initiatives Upon joining Trout Unlimited you will be assigned to a local Trout Unlimited Chapter. TU Chapters meet regularly to talk about fishing, discuss conservation issues, plan work days on their home waters, organize fundraisers, and of course, swap fish tales and learn how to tie the latest fly patterns.
