The Gaylord Regional Airport is located 5.8 miles west of Treetops and welcomes recreational and business flyers. Both Full Service Jet A and 100 LL fuel are available at the airport in addition to self-serve 100 LL. Ground crews, de-icing, tie downs, rental cars and overnight hangars are also available. Doc Samalik eventually sold Sylvan Nob in 1983 to auto part mogul Harry Melling of Melling Tool Company who had a grand vision. Wait for it. A ski resort. Crazy right? After expanding the now-resort with the 40-room Sylvan Inn, Haus Lounge, 140 lodging rooms, and more, Harry had another vision. This plan didn’t require a crystal ball either. Melling hired renowned golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Sr. to birth the first course on the property.
On his first visit, Jones Sr. and Melling toured the property, stopping on a plateau overlooking the Pigeon River Valley, on what is now the sixth tee of the Masterpiece Course. Noting the treetops extending to the horizon, they had the genius idea to name Sylvan Nob something marginally better: Treetops Resort.
Literally. Treetops has been nationally recognized for decades. The first notable piece of publicity being ESPN’s Par-3 Shootout in 2001 on, you guessed it, Threetops. Lee Trevino took the trophy, one million dollars, and lots of bragging rights. Golf legends Jack Nicklaus, Ray Floyd, and Phil Mickelson weren’t too happy about losing though. Tough luck. Hold your horses SkyNet. Leave the drones at home unless you get our blessing. Treetops prohibits just about everything that a drone can do. If you somehow get the green light, make sure it follows rules set by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), FBI, CIA, Homeland Security… well you get the gist. Violations are no bueno and may incur fines, legal fees, or get your sweet tech snatched by our staff where you can buy it back on Craigslist. Just kidding. Kind of.
and we mean it. Just because you’re not planning on getting an early start doesn’t mean everybody is going to be a lazy bone with you. If you think you’re too good for courtesy, then you’re too good for Treetops and we’ll have to ask you to leave.
