Todd Construction has been serving the construction needs of the Pacific Northwest since 1940 when Founder John D. Todd built his first housing project in Astoria. He officially incorporated and formed Todd Building Company in Roseburg in 1942. His son, John R. Todd joined the company in 1970 and now presides as Chairman. Under his leadership, the company continued to strengthen their client-focused culture and repeat business continued to grow. Brent Schafer joined the Todd Construction team in 1985 and has served as President since 2001. In over 15 years of leadership, he has continued the business philosophy established over 70 years ago – work hard, work smart, work together – and do what it takes to create satisfied clients who want Todd Construction back for their next project. Brent’s relentless drive toward the Company’s standard of “ ” has resulted in growth from an average volume of $15 million to a high of $80 million per year. All Rights Reserved Brent Schafer is an ideal mix of classic CEO and savvy, practical thinker. Having worked his way up from Assistant Estimator in 1985 to President in 2001, he has an uncanny ability to see the big picture and cut through tough issues to keep projects moving forward fast. He is the ultimate standard-setter for the Company, a role he takes seriously. Once at a company event a group of field professionals was discussing the adage, “measure twice, cut once,” within earshot. Brent stepped into the circle and offered his thoughts on the subject: “This is Todd Construction. We measure once, and we cut once.” Everybody nodded in agreement and went on to the next topic. At the same time Brent is the kind of leader who prefers to trust, support, and work through people because he knows the ones closest to the work typically have the best handle on the situation. He leads a Company whose culture does not include the phrase, “I’ll have to check with the home office.” Although he is connected to every project and up-to-speed on every important person, event or decision, Brent operates more like a coach than a quarterback, because Todd Construction already has plenty of great quarterbacks. If you look at the shelves above Brent’s desk you will see books with dog-eared pages and titles like “Good to Great”, “It’s Your Ship” and “The Score Takes Care of Itself”. His favorite quote, posted on the wall of the Company headquarters office, came from none less than football coach Vince Lombardi, for whom the Superbowl’s Lombardi Trophy is named. He said, “Gentlemen, we are going to relentlessly chase perfection, knowing full well we will not catch it. But we are going to relentlessly chase it, because in the process we will catch excellence.” Brent is a proud graduate of Oregon State University with a BS in Civil Engineering. He took over ownership of Todd Construction in 2007. Ken Dixon is uncommon in that while beginning his career as a CPA for a worldwide accounting firm he is… Ken Dixon is uncommon in that while beginning his career as a CPA for a worldwide accounting firm he is not the traditional “accountant type” but has the ability to stretch and apply his skills to many disciplines in the construction world. For instance he earned his LEED AP credential in 2003 and his Green Globes Professional credential in 2014. He manages projects requiring a high degree of personal attention and short-duration yet high-volume production. He oversees the Company culture of safety and heads up the Safety Committee. Ken enjoys getting as many people possible involved in safety because as he says, “Once people understand at the gut level that safety really does equal productivity, a fundamental shift in thinking and acting occurs that lifts the whole company.” Of course Ken also oversees the financial processes required to keep a dynamic construction enterprise like Todd Construction on solid financial footing. Areas of responsibility include budgeting, investing, and cash flow forecasting as well as internal and external financial reporting, taxes and systems management. He is always looking for the next great innovation to make projects more transparent and increase communication. Ken is a graduate of Oregon State University and holds a current CPA license. At a Company like Todd Construction, joining the team in 1998 still makes Ken the “new guy”. Harv Wingerd was born to be a construction superintendent. From the time he started with Todd Building Company as a… Harv Wingerd was born to be a construction superintendent. From the time he started with Todd Building Company as a laborer in 1969 he oriented himself to learn all he could from everyone he worked with, do the best quality work possible, and be the kind of person who made every project look easy. Although he achieved those goals long before, being named General Superintendent in 2008 solidified within the Company that Harv is at the top of the game. Harv has the special ability to work with any and everyone, inspiring their absolute best on all of his projects. His conflict resolution skills are second-to-none and there isn’t much in the world of construction he hasn’t worked with, operated, developed, built, or studied up on. In addition to running some of the Company’s largest and most complex projects he makes time to visit other jobs sites on a weekly basis to offer an extra set of eyes and some well earned praise. Harv has a passion to pass on his career experience and has written and taught his own curriculum for carpenters and carpenter foremen aspiring to be superintendents. Harv has an infectiously positive attitude. Greet him in the morning by asking how he is and expect to hear, “I’m like a tight pair of pants – ready to rip!” or “If I was any better I’d be twins!” The depth and breadth Harv brings to Todd Construction impacts all of the Company’s projects.
