Under the guidance of Commissioner Mark Pope, the league sponsors championships in 16 NAIA Sports: Baseball, Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Men’s and Women’s Cross Country, Football, Men’s and Women’s Golf, Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Softball, Men’s and Women’s Tennis, Men’s and Women’s Track and Field and Women’s Volleyball. Corporate sponsorship of the Conference has increased ten-fold; but most importantly, every Sun Conference member institution earned the NAIA’s prestigious 5-Star Champions of Character Award in three of the past four years.
The roots of The Sun Conference date back to 1990 when the league was originally formed as the Florida Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The founding members consisted of 8 Florida schools. With the addition of the University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB), Savannah College of Art & Design, Johnson and Wales University, Southeastern University, Ave Maria University and Thomas University, the Sun Conference now stands at 11 NAIA colleges and universities.
