THE SACRED SERVANT
The Sacred Servant doula accompanies, guides, empowers, comforts, and supports those with advanced illness or approaching end of life, and their family and caregivers.*
The Sacred Servant also provides end of life doula consulting, training and mentoring to hospice staff, trainers, and volunteers. The core of our services stems from providing educational training through individual consultations, group workshops, and mentoring other end of life doulas.
The Sacred Servant's name was created by Founder, Nada Frazier, as a result of her referring to her work for years as "sacred service." Frazier says, "I didn't quite know what to call the end of life doula work I did. When people would ask what I did, I simply started referring to myself as a 'sacred servant.' To me, being a sacred servant means that I simply do my best each day to authentically show up in service with integrity, compassion, and love."
The word "doula" comes from the Greek language referring to an important female household servant who supports during the birthing process. End of Life Doulas have been supporting the dying process since ancient times. The National End-of-Life Doula Alliance (NEDA) defines an End of Life Doula as one who "provides non-medical, holistic support and comfort to the dying person and their family, which may include education and guidance as well as emotional, spiritual or practical care.... The essence of doula care is to provide non-medical, non-judgmental support and guidance to individuals and families through times of critical, transformative life change."**
*The Sacred Servant does not provide medical care, mental health counseling, or legal services.
