Buying a Business
He has completed numerous business and professional courses including Valuing the Closely Held Business, Managing the Closely Held Business and Financing the Closely Held Business each sponsored by First National Bank of Louisville (now PNC). Additionally he has taken a seminar at Vanderbilt University’s Owen Graduate School of Management entitled “Valuation Methods and Techniques for the Closely Held Business”. He holds the designations of Certified Financial Recaster and Certified Franchise Consultant.
While Mr. Carswell has worked in sales and management for firms such as The Procter and Gamble Distributing Co., his first love is small business. He has served as a consultant to closely held businesses in manufacturing, software development, technology and distribution. He has been active in arranging mergers and/or acquisitions for firms both locally and nationally and has participated in 40+ transactions totaling over $75,000,000.
He has spoken on various topics including “Professional Selling”, “The Emerging Role of Women and Minorities in Small Business” and “Valuation of the Closely Held Business”. In 2006, Mr. Carswell served as a guest lecturer at the University Of Kentucky Gatton School Of Business.
Mr. Carswell and his wife have owned a number of small businesses (http://www.smockingshop.com/) and they often remark that they haven’t received a paycheck they haven’t written themselves for at least 30 years.
In addition to the above, he has belonged to the Louisville area Chamber of Commerce and The National Office Products Association. Over the years, Mr. Carswell has served on the boards of Prison Fellowship and Young Life Kentuckiana. He also served as a coach in the St. Matthews Little League for four years.
Mr. Carswell has been involved in a consulting capacity with several local firms in addition to serving on the Affiliate Advisory Board of Business Brokers Network in Dallas, TX. He has served on the boards of The Cabbage Patch Settlement House in Louisville and the St. Xavier High School PTA. He is currently an Elder in the Presbyterian Church in America and has served on the board of Covenant Classical Academy in Louisville.
