In Florida it is more common to see Terrazzo with a white cement binder, although we do often see gray cement in some older homes. During the mid-1900′s it became a very popular flooring option. A “green” product before the term existed, terrazzo was beautiful, clean and durable. However, maintenance typically involved just coating the floors with an acrylic sealer, requiring constant maintenance and not showing the true beauty of the stone. In the 70′s, carpet took over as the new flooring king. Had people known how beautiful and durable their floors could be if properly polished, this great cover up may never have occurred. The workers soon advanced their technique for rubbing the surfaces by designing a long handle with a weighted end to which they could fasten their rubbing stones. Now they were able to rub the terraces in a more comfortable upright position, utilizing their body weight to provide the pressure to abrade the surface faster. This tool was named the “Galera.” This is a picture passed down within the Venice Art Terrazzo Company from the founder John Di Filippo. It depicts a terrazzo installation and finishing crew in the early 1900s.This rare photo shows the terrazzo mechanics with trowel in hand and the finishers with the galera. A galera is a traditional grinding tool in use before electricity and the use of modern grinders. Around the same time, the janitorial industry took notice… They realized that the Natural Stone Guys were getting a premium for making Terrazzo shiny. They said, “Hey, we’ve been making VCT and Terrazzo shiny for years, we need to get in on this!” So they took their process of dumping harsh stripper on the floor, scrubbing it up, and dumping cheap wax on the floor and started calling it “Terrazzo Restoration.” But they certainly couldn’t do this for what they normally charge for a “Janitorial” service, so they raised their prices by The image on the left is the work of an unknown local “Terrazzo Restoration” Company that claims their work can yield beautiful results without spending a fortune…(The dull spots are where the finish began peeling off the floor the next day) The homeowner was charged $2000 for this Janitorial Service that should have only cost $200.
