Temple Solel is a Reform synagogue, located in Hollywood, Florida. Solel means “pathfinder,” and that is what we strive to be for today’s Jews. We help Jews create “GPS systems” for opportunities for spiritual growth, ongoing learning, and ways to respond to the challenges of contemporary life. We help our members connect to Judaism, and the entire Jewish people. At Temple Solel, we believe our GPS leads in four directions: – activism in the larger community. At Solel, we recognize the rabbinic adage that “every synagogue needs windows” – so that we can see the world. We believe in pursuing social justice, feeding the hungry, freeing contemporary slaves, helping those who have been ignored, and working with the community on the Sea Level Rise issue. Eventually, in the third year of the congregation’s existence, Abe Durbin declared, “Now we are going to build a building.” Abe arranged the financing and the acquisition of the land and was the force behind the temple to begin a building project. It took approximately three years for the building to be completed. The concept of liberal Reform Judaism was brought to the City of Hollywood, which already had an existing Reform temple and two Conservative synagogues, one a short distance away from Temple Solel. The term “liberal” was misleading. It meant that the temple would be more liberal with regard to Jewish traditions. The wearing of a yarmulka is mandatory at worship services. This has been since the inception of the temple and is in the by-laws of the congregation. The wearing of a tallit during Torah services As Solel began to grow, the Conservative congregation nearby, Temple Beth Shalom, ceased to exist and a number of families from that congregation joined Temple Solel, increasing its membership. Consequently, these families have been members at Temple Solel for 15 to 20 years. Temple Solel initiated the founding of the Interfaith Council of Greater Hollywood, the Broward Outreach Center for the homeless, and has been deeply involved in improving the Hollywood community. that numerous bar and bat mitzvah and wedding celebrations from other congregations are held at Temple Solel. In the course of its history, Temple Solel has created a twice-a-year Introduction to Judaism course taught by the rabbi, which has brought numerous Jews by Choice into the Solel Family. Temple Solel is a Reform synagogue, affiliated with the national and international Reform movement. Reform Judaism is considered the most “liberal” stream of American Judaism. Of all the streams – Reform, Conservative, Reconstructionist, and Orthodox – Reform Judaism’s embrace of the modern world and its lessons is the strongest. Reform Judaism prioritizes making informed Jewish choices; ongoing Jewish learning; meaningful, beautiful worship; gender equality; and tikkun olam (repairing the world through social justice). What are services like at Temple Solel? You will find our services to be a sweet blend of old and new, traditional and experimental. Much of the service is in Hebrew, and much of it is sung – both by Cantor Israel Rosen and by the congregation itself. Temple Solel uses the Reform movement’s current liturgies, and Rabbi Salkin always adds teaching and introspective moments to the worship experience. Services on Friday evening (erev Shabbat) begin at 7:30 pm, and last for about an hour. An oneg Shabbat (refreshments and socializing) always follow. Temple Solel requires four years of Jewish education, and regular attendance, in order for children to be eligible to celebrate bar/bat mitzvah. Religious school is on Sunday mornings and, for older children, on Tuesday afternoons as well. What else do you have for kids at Temple Solel? We have a full-blown youth program, consisting of youth groups and informal education. Our young people are involved in their own governance and planning of these events. Our youth are a major priority at Temple Solel.
