Walter Kitching started it all by providing goods and services to the pioneers along the Indian River from his schooner the “Merchant” (pictured right). Walter and his son-in-law, John Taylor began their mercantile business in Stuart in the early 1900’s. John began the Insurance and real estate business in 1937. After serving in the 82nd Airborne in WWII, John’s son-in-law, Dick Ashley joined the firm in 1946. In 1957 Taylor Ashley moved from Osceola Avenue to its present Colorado Avenue location. The tradition of a full line of services and a commitment to complete customer satisfaction continues today as the fourth and even fifth-generation operate the business along with an experienced and skilled staff. Today, the business is owned and operated by Dick Ashley’s daughters (Jo, Judy and Margie), husbands, children, grandchildren and a great-great grandson. Soon after receiving my education from Stetson University in 1962, I married Ron Paradise on Thanksgiving Day, 1962. I spent a short time teaching before moving to Tallahassee, FL where Ron completed his studies at FSU. After raising both of our children, I became an insurance and real estate agent and joined our family-owned real estate, insurance and property management firm, Taylor – Ashley. The agency was founded by my grandfather 75 years ago, and over the years our employees have included, children, grandchildren, siblings and brothers-in-law. We truly are one big happy family. Judy has been a full-time personal lines insurance agent for the past 25 years. She also says that she has been in the insurance business her entire life – she is Dick Ashley’s third daughter. Her specialty is providing cost-effective insurance with a personal touch. Judy is another Stuart native. She graduated from Martin County High and graduated from Stetson University with a major in French. She started working part-time at the Taylor Ashley Agency after her children reached school age. Deeva recently joined the Taylor Ashley Agency as a part-time personal lines insurance agent. She has been working in the insurance industry for the past 42 years and has been a licensed agent for 20 years. She has a wealth of experience in placing home, vehicle, flood and other insurance. Larry has been Taylor Ashley’s commercial -lines insurance agent for the past 35 years. His specialty is finding the right commercial insurance solution to fill the needs of our business customers. Larry writes a full range of insurance policies including worker’s Comp, liability insurance and surety bonds. Janice has worked at Taylor Ashley for more than fifty years. She was hired by John Taylor who taught her to save paper clips, save used carbon paper and use both sides of paper. She has successfully transitioned through the many and extensive changes in the insurance business to be our agency management coordinator in today’s web-based computer environment. She is often times the voice on the phone and specializes in servicing our long-time policy holders (and friends). Joy is the fourth generation to pursue a career with the Taylor Ashley Agency. She has 9 years of experience as a receptionist learning the business before earning her 220 personal lines insurance license in October 2015. Joy graduated from Martin County High School and the University of South Florida. She is the proud mother of four grown children whom she hopes will become fifth generation participants in the Taylor Ashley Agency. 2.
