View our range of timber products Great pride is taken when selecting the wood supplied and the importance of exceptional customer service is key. By personally purchasing the logs on site, overseeing the milling, kiln drying and end sale Ben is able to be completely confident in the quality of his product and offer a fair and competitive price to his clients. Sutton Timber are able to provide traceability for all our logs. At point of sale each log is tagged with a unique identity number. After milling it is then transported to Sotterley Sawmills in Suffolk for drying. The tags remain with the timber until it is sold ensuring that we are able to track the timber back to the estate from where it originated. With a business heritage stretching back over 20 years Ben has decided to further develop and grow his business. The product range has been extended to include engineered flooring a joinery workshop has been opened to offer a bespoke service to customers. Beautiful solid and engineered floors, kitchen worktops, ledge and brace doors and staircases are just part of the range now available as finished products. Air dried timber is moved from Helmdon Sawmills in Northamptonshire to our yard at Sotterley Sawmills in Suffolk. This is where Ben’s team takes over production. We have five high tech kilns to further dry the wood. This lengthy process of reducing the moisture content of the wood produces boards suitable for flooring in a centrally heated environment. We use different diameter classes for different productions. For example, our production for kitchen manufacturing is not a by-product from beam grade material, it is a high-quality log with a small diameter (40cm to 50cm) that allows us to produce a superb board 20cm to 40cm in width and 2.5m or 3m in length, ideally suited for the purpose. Our Mission Our mission is to supply a dependable and reliable service focussing on high quality and sustainable products. View our range of timber products Within our business we make decisions to help support the estates’ foresters to work and protect these sites. We wholly support the responsible management of our woodlands and ensure we source timber from sustainable forests. Ben Sutton is committed to conservation and he approaches his trade with care. He personally selects and buys all our timber from managed woodland. Granted by the Forestry Authority, a felling license is proof of where trees are felled, who owned them and that they have been felled legally in an environmentally friendly manner. This enables us to provide provenance for all our timber. ’Choosing Sutton Timber and English engineered ash Flooring was the single best decision we made during the whole of our refurbishment.’ “We are delighted with the beautiful elm flooring supplied by Sutton Timber for our wonderfully restored Library. The floor looks absolutely fabulous and yet is so practical. We’ve had many, many compliments on the excellence of the restoration and almost all have commented on the quality of the flooring. Thank you Sutton Timber.” ``Sutton Timber are happy to discuss clients individual requirements as we appreciate every project is different. Specialising in long wide boards we always seek out timber of the highest quality with the most interesting grain. We pride ourselves in offering a bespoke and personal service.” ``It has been reassuring to work with Sutton Timber who have helped source and supply much of the high quality, well seasoned English oak required for such a challenging project as the restoration of this historic vessel - Havengore `` ``I found it difficult to procure thick section oak in the UK I required for the large exterior windows and doors in my main house. After considerable research Sutton Timber was the only place I found who stocked matured thick section oak that was suitable. Sutton Timber have been extremely useful to me for construction of my wood conservatory, supplying large oak beams for internal and external use, plus cedar boards for inside the conservatory and fabulous solid oak boards for flooring.” Ben Sutton, Sutton Timber I found Sutton Timber via the internet, searching for hardwood engineered floors from sustainable sources. I was particularly keen on timber sourced within the UK, ideally from a tree that had fallen naturally. I was particularly keen on timber sourced within the UK, ideally from a tree that had fallen naturally. I was advised elm was listed and could only be used if it had come to a natural end. This appealed enormously. The website was very helpful and laid out in a style that was easy to follow and informative. I had a number of conversations regarding engineered floors with Ben on the phone who was patient, very helpful and not pushy. I am not a professional fitter/carpenter and Ben inspired confidence in choosing this material for my kitchen. I have fitted one other engineered floor in my home using engineered boards so I had a little experience. I visited the yard at Sotterley Sawmills and was shown the product, and advised that it wasn’t going to fit in my estate! Delivery of the engineered floor arrived on time and as expected. Fitting proved reasonably straight forward. I floated the floor and the main difficulty was a single step down to the lower level where I decided to use a strip perpendicular to the boards running lengthways. I used a thin plank of off cut elm which I planed down and routed a groove into. A join to make the length was necessary and I was happy with the result. I have subsequently seen a different technique, omitting the strip but I am happy with how my solution turned out. Where no skirting was used, I used a little cork strip, which blends in well. So well in fact that I might have omitted the skirting entirely, maybe next time. “We recently purchased elm from Sutton Timber for our kitchen. We were invited to the sawmills to view the timber where Ben showed us the range of elm available to us and was extremely helpful and knowledgeable giving us sound advice. The sawmill is pretty impressive in itself with the timber neatly stacked and working kilns, it was incredibly well organised. The finished kitchen, solid wood drawers, side panels and architrave look perfect. Plus the engineered elm flooring we have in the adjoining breakfast room looks fabulous. Thank you Ben for your help and we have already recommended you to lots of friends.”
