On the right is one of my earliest drawings I still have preserved. It’s dated from at least as far back as 1982 by the phone numbers to the hospital where my grandfather stayed after he suffered a stroke, making me three years old. My grandmother and my mom would take the Archer bus downtown to go shopping on the weekends, and I remember handing it to her from the back seat as we dropped them off at the bus stop. It hung on her refrigerator until I took it down and sealed it in plastic when I was 17.
Later, in the 4th grade, everyone was given an award. I didn’t understand what it meant yet, but my ribbon was for “Most Analytical.” By about 5th or 6th grade, my first major work was published. My design had been chosen for the cover of the school yearbook. Before graduating grade school, I was already learning desktop publishing software. My dad, an engineer, was in sales of manufacturing equipment. He hired the editor of the high school newspaper to help work on a product catalog. She went off to college, and I learned
While still part-time, I’ve worked as an event production manager responsible for entertaining over 60,000 fans in a single show. My duties included playing all event music and video spots, directing camera, sound, spotlight, ribbon board and scoreboard operators, and being the only person in radio contact with the event announcer–all at the same time. Wearing two radio headsets and listening to the Event Manager and several other staff, the term “multitasking” was taken to a whole new level.
The breadth of my design experience is just far-reaching, including so much more than just page layout, brand identity and marketing campaigns. I have designed (or been part of the team) over 25 vehicles, and in March this year, my 11th Hot Wheels® die-cast had debut. A limited edition run of only 2,500 pieces–I have designed both the product and packaging of these collectibles for the last 5 years. Other projects have included everything from advertisements, signage and other informational design pieces to several DVD’s packaging, numerous t-shirts and other merchandise, fire suits, helmets, credentials and so much more. One of my most unique designs was a slot machine used at The Quad (formerly Imperial Palace) in Las Vegas. In addition to the Adobe Design Suite, I have also been incorporating Blender 3D software into print design and other projects.
Having studied photography throughout college, it has really become a passion of mine. Although there is no official photography management position at Feld Motor Sports, I am often referred to as the “photo guru.” I am the technical manager of 12 other photographers, handle all archiving and storage of over 120,000 images per year and fulfill photo requests from all departments throughout the company for various needs. Traveling from coast-to-coast, I have handled over 30 photo shoots for the company, including complete coverage of action sports events, press conferences, product and model studio work and other projects I’ve conceived or art directed including yearbook articles and posters. I have done studio shoots with top athletes such as Ryan Villopoto and Ricky Carmichael, many Monster Energy girls, and have worked with TV celebrities such as Conan O’Brien and Travis Pastrana, among many others. I perform all of these duties on top of my responsibilities as a designer.
I’ve never been a giant comic fan, but one of the most unique projects I was involved in was a one-off live show called Marvel Monstergeddon. Our team conceived, wrote and storyboarded an entire show planned to literally take over Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego during Comic-Con. The venue would literally become the Marvel Universe, and the show would tell our story using monster trucks, stunts, acrobatics, pyro, visual effects and even use the stadium video capability to include comic cells and animations. Support was enthusiastic but it never became reality, most likely due to high production cost for a single event. Some of my ideas from the original meetings made it into our final script, but I was chosen as the technical expert to deliver the presentation to top-level executives across the country such as at Marvel’s headquarters in New York and studios in L.A. Our creation has lived on, and although not a monster truck based show,
