Sunrise Swimming, Inc., established in 1998 as the Sunrise Seahawk Swim Team by Coach Garry Nelson, is a competitive swimming club located at the Sunrise Civic Center, 10610 West Oakland Park Blvd, Sunrise, FL. Initially founded with an emphasis on developing athletes through quality instruction and instilling key values of loyalty, commitment, and work ethic, the program has thrived under subsequent leadership changes and affiliations. In 2001, Coach Dave Wathen took over as Head Coach and rebranded the team to Sunrise Swimming. His tenure was marked by remarkable achievements, including producing nationally ranked age-group swimmers and securing a Top 10 finish at the Florida Gold Coast Junior Olympics. The club became affiliated with the Plantation Swim Team (PST) in 2003 but resumed its status as an independent program after Coach Dave's retirement from the City of Plantation in 2013. Today, as part of a United States Swimming (USS)-authorized full-service aquatics center, Sunrise Swimming offers competitive swim teams, comprehensive private and group lessons for swimmers of all ages and abilities, and a masters' swimming program. All coaches are members of the American Swim Coaches Association, ensuring access to advanced training programs recognized as the most comprehensive in youth sports coaching within the United States. Christi Wathen, an alumnus of Florida Gators and co-owner, brings extensive experience from her career spanning over three decades as a swim instructor and coach. She currently oversees Sunrise Swimming’s lesson program and contributes to the Strokes-n-Fun group initiative. Dave Wathen, who also holds a Level 5 ASCA Certification - representing the highest level of coaching achievement in the US - leads athletes towards national age-group success and further accomplishments at collegiate and Olympic levels. The club's dedication to fostering growth and nurturing young talent ensures the maintenance of a well-rounded aquatics program, continually evolving with the commitment of its members. Sunrise Swimming invites enthusiasts interested in competitive swimming and personal development through aquatic sports to become part of their community.
