My name is Odalis Soto. In 2014, I decided to take a leap of faith and start an online t-shirt company. In 2001, after working as a graphic designer for eighteen years in the corporate world, I reinvented myself and started my teaching career as a graphic design instructor.
Recently, my husband became unemployed, and out of desperation he had the notion that he could start a food truck business. It came as the result of what I like to call a “think tank”, a family brainstorm of sorts. My niece and husband were devising ideas for a lunch truck business that would serve only breakfast when my niece, inspired by her grandmother’s fried eggs, came up with the name Sunny Side Up. Fortunately for me, the lunch truck idea did not materialize, but SUNNY SIDE UP Threads did.
As SUNNY SIDE UP Threads started to become a reality, I could not stop thinking about the classroom and my kids. And how often many of them go without ever having art supplies, relying only on what the teacher and the classroom can provide. I realized I was starting a new business but I had not left the classroom nor did I want to. This is how the Flying Coop Art fund turned into a reality.
