An eclectic range of influences including Egyptian, Thai, Cambodian, and Asia as a whole has contributed to Stanford’s distinct style. The Asian influence flows from his art, to his lifestyle, and even the food he eats. The aesthetic world of fashion photography and lifestyle shoots is part of the major influences we observe. Stanford has worked with Raphael Mazzucco and admired Peter Beard’s work which has influenced Mazzucco. The beauty of the human form is a main source of inspiration, mostly the female body. Travel is also a major source of inspiration hence we see some spectacular landscapes, monuments and Temples. The colour gold is a favourite of the artist, because of its warmth and reflective qualities. Gold leaf is almost always used, similar to Gustav Klimt, whom serves also as an influence mostly during Klimt’s Golden phase. The great masters of the past renaissance also serve as inspiration, particularly in the use of an old, hand-made paint called tempera, which is made of egg yolk. Yet the work is grounded in the contemporary era, with subtle neo pop art influences, like a re-imagined version of Andy Warhol, Stanford can take from popular culture but renders the pop element into a timeless new vision making it very rich in detail and therefore much more complex than what we consider pop art. More recent pieces are solely based on his fine art photography that is transformed into Stanford’s distinctive mixed media approach.
