Based in the charming city of St. Augustine, Florida, the St. Augustine Orchestra, Inc. is an esteemed group composed of around 80 volunteer musicians who come together not just for music, but for a shared experience that brings joy and artistic expression to life. Founded as a Florida corporation back in May 1989 and later achieving 501(c)(3) status with the IRS in August 2006, this orchestra is more than just a musical entity-it's a community builder on stage and off. Every year, their performances draw packed houses, an indication of the high-quality productions that resonate deeply within local audiences. Governed by a dedicated Board of Directors, the SAO ensures smooth operations and effective policy-making to continue its legacy. The orchestra frequently aligns itself with the heartbeats of St. Augustine, partnering with local governments, civic groups, and educational bodies on numerous occasions. These collaborations have led to memorable productions such as Gilbert and Sullivan’s 'The Mikado', ‘The Pirates of Penzance’ at The Little Theater, Flagler College's rendition of 'Man of La Mancha', and the annual Handel's 'Messiah'. Venues like the Lightner Museum, Jacksonville Landing, and others have hosted these captivating events. With a legacy rich in talent, SAO has featured notable musicians such as the internationally acclaimed cellist Emil Maestre. Figures like William Turnbull, who served as a significant music director, have left an indelible mark on its history. The orchestra's journey has been guided by various dynamic leaders, including current Artistic and Executive Director Gregg, known for founding the First Coast Community Music School to enhance musical education and opportunities.
