Strong cash generators, the Performance Chemicals businesses are engaged in programs of excellence to create additional sustainable value. This Segment covers the GBU Energy Services, which provides energy optimization programs for the Group and for third parties. It also includes the corporate functions of the Group. Novecare develops and produces formulations that alter the properties of liquids. It offers solutions to the oil and gas industry using the world’s largest portfolio of chemicals. Novecare also provides specialty solutions for certain industrial applications, agricultural and coatings markets.  As a leader in markets with high entry barriers and strong returns on investment, the Advanced Materials segment is a major contributor to the Group’s performance and growth. With over 1,500 products, Specialty Polymers offers the widest range of high performance polymers in the world, allowing tailor-made solutions such as pushing the limits of metal replacement in the electronics, automotive, aircraft and healthcare industries. The GBU has unparalleled expertise in three technologies: aromatic polymers, high barrier polymers and fluoropolymers. As a top tier supplier to the aerospace engineered materials market known for our technology leadership and the value the GBU brings to our customers: scale and technical capability, profitability in the top quartile of peers, double-digit earnings growth in previous business cycles. The success of this business Segment, which operates in mature and robust markets, is based on economies of scale, competitiveness, and quality of service. Soda Ash & Derivatives is the world’s largest producer of soda ash and sodium bicarbonate, sold primarily to the glass industries and also used in detergents, agro, food and feed industries. It provides resilient profitability thanks to good pricing, dynamics growing at mid-single digit rate, underpinned by high-quality assets. Coatis manufactures glycerin-based sustainable solvents solutions sold globally and specialty phenols mainly sold in Latin America. It enjoys undisputed market leadership position in Brazil for Phenol & Derivatives, which are used in the production of synthetic resins for foundries, construction and abrasives. As from Q3 2017, Performance Chemicals also encompasses the remaining business activities previously included in the Functional Polymers segment: following the signing of the binding agreement with German chemical company BASF for the sale of its Polyamides business in September, 2017, those polyamide activities, which constituted the major part of Functional Polymers, were reclassified to discontinued operations.   This Segment covers the Energy Services GBU, which provides energy optimization programs for the Group and for third parties. It also includes the corporate functions of the Group. Business Services Business Services covers, in a global shared services organization, all the Group’s IT services and its main administrative departments (accounting, credit, customer service, customs, payroll and personnel administration and procurement). Solvay provides a simple, adapted and secure service through its aggregation offer and supports all renewable electricity producers in the implementation of the Energy Transition Act. The company was born in 1863 out of a technological breakthrough, the ammonia-soda process set up by Ernest Solvay and a small circle of relatives including his brother Alfred.  1914 - 1949. The outbreak of the First World War marked the end of an era and the advent of a new World order. Solvay repeatedly had to adapt its strategy to radically new geopolitical and business landscapes. 2008 - Tomorrow. Recent years have witnessed an intense transformation of the Group’s profile. The divestment of the pharma business and the acquisition of Rhodia in only two years’ time radically modified the perimeter and the strategy of the Group. The idea of designing, building and flying a zero-emission aircraft around the world was totally aligned with our unwavering commitment to develop transformative clean technologies that ease dependency on carbon-emitting fossil fuels.  Since 2003, our dedicated teams of scientists, engineers, dreamers and innovators have collaborated closely with like-minded individuals from Solar Impulse and leading technological partners to do away with convention. Instead we developed clean-sheet solutions to dramatically improve the energy chain, enhance the structure and reduce the weight of the solar-powered aircraft – crucial elements that are helping to make this historic flight a success.
