In 2017 The Smyrna Surfari Club is celebrating its 38th year of existence.
So the Surfari Club decided that their mission would be to raise money and give it to a surfer to go to college or vocational school. The best football player in his high school always gets a chance to go to college, and so does the best basketball player. The Surfaris thought that the best surfer deserved to go, too. The Club organized a surf contest, sold raffle tickets and the proceeds went to fund the first Smyrna Surfari Club High School Scholarship for $500. It was awarded to Brian Millard in 1980. Brian went on to found his own CPA firm in Winter Park. Since 1979, the Club has hosted over 100 surf contests, awarded over $200,000 in scholarship monies and similar stories of the success of the Surfari Club Scholarship recipients over the ensuing 38 years are too numerous to cover here.
event. This event is for tykes 10 years and under who with the help of their parents, are guided into waves on their way to fame. Each competitor gets a t-shirt, surfing medallion and memories of a life time. Competitors in our events who finish at or near the top of their divisions are awarded trophies. These trophies are unique for each one is handmade by Club members. Each wood trophy is shaped like a surfboard and can be considered a work of art. Over the years many of the competitors have stated that these were their favorite of all the trophies they have won.
It was proposed, designed and paid for entirely by the Surfari Club. The monument was destroyed by a hurricane in 2005, and is now in its third incarnation. The plaque on the monument reads: “This monument was dedicated by the Smyrna Surfari Club in 2001, to commemorate the significance of the sport of surfing to the local community.”
Since the inception of the Balloon Fest in 2009, the Surfari Club has been an active participant, with as many as twenty members at a time rotating in shifts. Club volunteers help work the gates, coordinate the parking and organize the cleanup. (We love to clean up!) Although most of our projects usually take place on the beach, the Club volunteers agreed that the Balloon Fest is a great outreach to the nonsurfing public, as well as a valuable fundraiser.
The Surfari Club was instrumental in the production of the AloeUp Cup surf contests in 1988 and 1989, the last internationally rated contests on the East Coast for more than twenty years.
Over the past years Jim Spencer, Rector at Saint Peter The Fisherman Episcopal Church, Club Chaplin and staunch supporter, has help raise funds for our Club’s events and charitable endeavors. As a result of his hard work, the generous donations of his church’s members and Club fund raising efforts, the Club donated over $10,000 to the following organizations in the past two years:
If you want to help support the club’s special projects,
page. Surfari Club sponsorship helps support our scholarship fund, our surf contests and this web site. We’re a non-profit organization with very low overhead and an all volunteer staff, so almost all of your sponsorship dollars go directly to providing deserving students with help in continuing their education and to making the club’s surf contests and events even bigger and better. Also, individual donations are always accepted and much appreciated. 100% of all individual donations are applied directly to our civic projects. No administrative fees are ever taken out.
