From a tiny south Florida shadehouse to a multi-million square foot production range, Andrew and Ilma Bartha grew Silver Vase on a premise of unmatched innovation and uncompromising quality. After 12 years of managing other horticulture businesses, the couple began their fledgling orchid business in 1988. From its modest start in a 5,000 square foot plot of shade houses in Homestead, Florida, the company grew considerably in a few short years. But in 1992 the devastating Hurricane Andrew struck, completely destroying the Silver Vase facilities and hundreds of other Miami-Dade area businesses. Seeing a window for growth, the Barthas and their team refocused on rebuilding and resurging. As Silver Vase built a name for itself, the company experienced tremendous growth, increasing annual production from 400,000 units in 1997 to nearly 5 million units today. The Barthas’ passion and persistence paid off, as today Silver Vase is known as North America’s most innovative orchid and bromeliad grower. They search the world over for truly unique introductions, most recently introducing the market to the Espresso collection of pocket phalaenopsis orchids, the Vanda collection, and Blue Mystique, the world’s first blue phalaenopsis orchid.
