In 1937, his son, Dr. Charles Mérieux, took up the reins of his father’s laboratory after his death. In the 1940's, he introduced a technique developed by the Dutchman Frenkel - in vitro culture – which revolutionized the manufacture of vaccines and led to the production of reagents for in vitro diagnostic testing. The family's corporate holding was later extended in the 1990s to address food safety and nutrition issues, through the acquisition of American food testing company Silliker. It was this acquisition which later resulted in Mérieux NutriSciences. Food safety and nutrition are major public health challenges that are integrated in public health policies in many countries. More broadly, protecting health entails the security of products that could, in their daily use, risk the health of consumers. Dr. John H. Silliker Silliker is the historical pillar of Mérieux NutriSciences and a pioneer in the field of food safety and quality. The company was created in 1967 in the United States by Dr. John H. Silliker, a microbiologist known for his work on Salmonella, who began his own business with a staff of just four people.
