Concierge medicine, he believed, could provide doctors with something they truly wanted: space in their schedules to give patients thoughtful, high-quality service. Matt’s vision emerged while working as senior vice president of an insurance company that specialized in workers’ compensation. He found that investing more resources up front to send injured workers to talented, top-notch physicians meant they often required fewer medical interventions and made a faster return to everyday life. He saw personalized concierge medicine as a way to offer quality service to a range of program members. But he discovered that existing concierge medicine options were flawed. For example, typical concierge models require physicians to “terminate” patients who don’t join the concierge practice, making physicians uneasy and creating financial risk by eliminating existing fee-for-service revenue. As a result, the SignatureMD team encourages physicians to hire a physician extender or another physician to see non-member patients. The company uses a conservative predictive methodology to help affiliated physicians plan for the future. And SignatureMD’s flexible model can be tailored to suit individual practices. No cookie cutter approaches here. SignatureMD-affiliated physicians say they appreciate Matt’s straightforward, honest analysis, and the attentive, personal service that he and the SignatureMD team provide. “We try to treat the doctors like family members and go the extra mile,” Matt says. “We’re not some big, faceless corporation.” His policy, he says, is to under-promise and over-perform. “I want all of our affiliated physicians to stay with us long-term,” he says. “We need to earn their continued business each and every day.” Matthew Jacobson founded SignatureMD, Inc. in 2007. Prior to establishing SignatureMD, he spent fifteen years in operational management roles in public and private companies. Mr. Jacobson spent 2002-2006 at Zenith Insurance Company (NYSE: ZNT). As Senior Vice President of Medical Management at Zenith, he was responsible for turning around a $160M division with 200 employees, doing business in 40 jurisdictions. Michael Rhind joined SignatureMD in 2013 and is responsible for finance, accounting, and operations, including doctor conversions and member services. He has more than 25 years experience in finance and accounting, including more than 15 years as Vice President of Finance and Controller of Aptium Oncology, a Los Angeles based firm that managed and operated outpatient cancer centers. At Aptium he managed all accounting, forecasting, decision-support, and financial reporting functions, and created and maintained accounting policies and procedures. In addition, he served as Interim Executive Director of a 40,000-square foot comprehensive cancer center in Boca Raton, Fla., and Interim Financial Director of a cancer center in New York City. Before joining SignatureMD, Mr. Rhind briefly worked as Chief Financial Officer of Christals Acquisition, LLC, where he assisted a private equity group in acquiring and consolidating a women´s apparel retail chain store. A certified public accountant, Mr. Rhind began his career at Price Waterhouse LLC, where he was a tax manager serving clients in the entertainment and healthcare industries. He earned his bachelor´s degree in economics and business from the University of California, Los Angeles. Mr. Manavi holds bachelor´s degrees in physics and electrical engineering and a master´s degree in business administration, all from the University of California, Irvine. He holds two patents in the field of traffic engineering and has several other computer network-related patents pending approval. We’re here to help. Talk to a SignatureMD team member at Converting to a concierge model with the help of SignatureMD changed everything. They see a fraction of the patients they once did, and spend more time listening, educating patients, and focusing on preventive care. “We can talk about important problems that we could only glance over before because we didn’t have time,” Dr. Benedict says. “This is the way medicine should be practiced.” Jim Williams feels as though he has a calling to provide thoughtful care to his patients, most of whom are senior citizens. “It’s very worthwhile work,” he says. “Older individuals are the ones who need us the most.” Based on the recommendation of a physician friend, Dr. Williams began talking with SignatureMD, and chose to convert with the company to concierge practice. While SignatureMD provides invaluable help with logistical issues such as billing for membership fees, Dr. Saltman likes that the company “doesn’t get involved in what we do for patients.” Other companies dictate which tests physicians must conduct in a patient’s annual physical. Not SignatureMD. “They respect us and know we’re going to do a thorough and comprehensive job. They take care of the logistical end so that we can practice medicine.” He began researching concierge medicine, but disliked that most concierge companies required him to dismiss his nurse practitioners. “SignatureMD was the only company that embraced the idea of my nurse practitioners staying on board,” Dr. Verheul says. Patients who didn’t want to switch to concierge service remained with the nurse practitioners. That patient pool has become a “constant renewable source of program members for me,” he says. The concierge schedule gives Dr. Verheul time to provide stellar patient service. Roughly 75 percent of his patients are seniors on Medicare, and he knows many crave social interaction. He began hosting activities for patients, including dances led by a dance instructor. “Since my husband and I have signed up for SignatureMD, we are very happy with the experience. Dr. Stein is available night and day, 24/7. Our appointments are on time and our phone calls are answered within five minutes. When we are in his office for our appointments, Dr. Stein will spend two hours, if necessary, examining us and all our ailments. His suggestions are very helpful and we are never rushed. I needed a doctor for severe spinal lumbar stenosis and he called a doctor and we had an appointment that day. Every doctor he has recommended for us, we are very pleased with and are still seeing.
