My job is to help you do great things. This is what I love most about working with entrepreneurs, actually. These are the people I work with. And my goal is to help these people – people like you – accomplish more great things. Each and every day. I’m Peter Shallard, the Shrink for Entrepreneurs. As a renowned business psychology expert and therapist gone renegade, I work with all types of entrepreneurs around the globe as these people strive to reach greater goals of wealth, freedom and social impact. That last one is important. I’m obsessed with the pursuit of for-profit business that simultaneously makes a positive change in the world. Helping entrepreneurs create such businesses is mission. I worked in clinical therapy for several years, helping people overcome anxiety, depression, addictions… the hard work stuff, the stuff of dark places. But I did well, there were plenty of success stories, and my private practice received many referrals from medical doctors who recognized the value of my services. to change or leave their comfort zone, no matter how unhealthy it is. I found that disheartening. Discouraging, to tell the truth. My job was to help people change and provide them with all the tools they needed to unlock their future, but most never used them. It’s also worth mentioning that all the new messaging platforms can reduce email to the most mission critical messages only, if used correctly. Slack is powerful because it took internal company communication out of my inbox directly. Now Slack feeds straight into my task list as needed, while simultaneously making our team tighter and more efficient than ever. After Slack, the only emails I receive are from outsiders – which means every email is even more valuable as an opportunity to connect, delight and create a life long fan. You can still be judicious about deleting emails too. I am. Email me an unsolicited pitch and I’ll delete it and never respond. Why? Because fuck you! Life is too short, and I believe in Zero Inbox. I’m not going to lose any sleep over not responding to communication – of any form – that betrays a total lack of curiosity, generosity or business intelligence from the sender. Zero Inbox doesn’t entitle every idiot to a slice of your time. Using the tactics I’ve touched on, it’s possible to receive and response – as I do – to hundreds of emails a day while still achieving inbox zero several times a week. What’s more, you can forge a terrific advantage for yourself in life and business by adding value for hundreds more people than the next guy by using these communication tools. Writing blog posts. Working on your code. White boarding out that new product idea. Whatever “work” you really need to do. There’s time for it ALL, and you’re better at it than ever because Maybe email isn’t evil or even broken. Maybe most people are just doing it wrong. You’ll find entrepreneurs everywhere. They’re freelancers, small business owners, corporate executives and big business linchpins. They’re going after success every day, from starting their own venture to creating new products to negotiating multimillion-dollar deals to changing people’s lives. Instead of miracle cleaning products or exercise equipment it’s the course, the revolutionary training or seminar that promises “secrets”. Maybe it’s our enduring sense of imposter syndrome.
