We make our living by dismantling and recycling the computers and electronics we receive from our customers. All components are recycled responsibly and will never be disposed of in a landfill. All components given to us that may contain any data will be shredded ensuring that the data can never be recovered. Sensible Recycling was founded in 2016 by Aaron Enos. As an avionics technician in the United States Navy, Aaron worked on everything from radars to radios as a technician on the P-3 Orion anti-submarine aircraft. Aaron has spent the majority of his career since the military in the metal recycling industry. He is now bringing his passion and knowledge to electronics recycling and strives to change the industry with no cost, secure electronics recycling model. Sensible Recycling After 26 years of Air Force service, Joe began his role at Sensible Recycling in Operations, using his expertise in military installations, electronic/telephone/radio communication and logistics. His experience both abroad and at home has brought a breadth of talent that continues through sensible electronic recycling. Joe is also a community volunteer, working with children with special needs as well as an active member of Assumption Parish in Jacksonville. Joe enjoys puppies, cooking and long Sunday walks on the beach with his wife. Sensible Recycling Production Sensible Recycling Production Sensible Recycling Sensible Recycling If you have been looking around, you may notice that some electronics recyclers advertise the fact they have an EPA ID number. What is it, and should it influence your decision for making a choice in electronic recycling centers? I want to take a few minutes and explain what an EPA number is and what it means. It seems a bit misleading when you look at the fancy symbol, or hear someone tell you their facility has an EPA ID number. It sounds like it means the site is ultra-environmentally friendly, but… An EPA ID number is used to identify hazardous waste generators, transporters, treatment, and storage and disposal facilities. It is not an endorsement of a clean, environmental facility, and the EPA does not issue certifications for electronics recycling. The EPA uses the ID number as a way to keep track of the businesses that deal with hazardous waste. When it comes to recycling electronics, none of it is considered hazardous waste in the State of Florida. Cathode Ray Tubes (CRT’s) can be considered hazardous waste if they are collected stored beyond a certain amount of time. If an electronics recycling center is collecting and storing CRT’s for an extended amount of time, they aren’t doing the right thing with them. Some batteries must be managed as hazardous waste, falling under the universal waste regulations, but as long as they are not being stored for an extended amount of time it is not counted toward the facility being classified as a generator. As far as electronics recycling goes, the following States are the only States that count electronics as Universal Waste: Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Louisiana, Michigan, Nebraska, New Jersey. So why do some electronics recycling centers have an EPA ID number? Maybe they don’t understand what it is. Maybe they are storing material like CRT’s and batteries. If they are storing material like that, are they really recycling and doing what you expect a recycler to do? Finally, maybe they know that the majority of the public doesn’t understand what an EPA ID really means and uses this misperception as a marketing tactic. I think most people would understand the EPA ID number to mean the facility is EPA certified, but as I mentioned, the EPA does not certify electronics recyclers. Don’t let the deception fool you when you need to make a choice in an electronics recycling center. Sensible Recycling brings a different approach to electronics recycling and computer disposal. We don’t charge for our recycling and computer disposal services, and we shred or physically destroy all of the hard drives we receive. We are not a scrap yard and do not collect or buy scrap metal. We are also not a computer refurbisher, and do not wipe your hard drives and reuse the computers we receive. These two statements make us fundamentally different from our competitors for the following reasons: Your hard drives will always be physically destroyed. Since we do not refurbish computers, we have no need for the hard drives. Unlike a refurbisher, we do not wipe and reuse any drives, nor do we sell them whole. Unlike a scrap yard, we do not buy and sell whole hard drives. Data protection means destroying hard drives, not resuing your drive or someone else’s drive to rebuild computers. Our means of data destruction is secure. If your hard drive winds up in a scrap yard, you will never know what happens to it. It could wind up anywhere and in the hands of anyone. If your hard drive goes to a computer refurbisher, chances are it will be wiped and reused. You will never know if your data has truly been destroyed because you will never see it once it leaves your possession. If a hard drive takes hours, or more than a day to be securely wiped by DOD methods and a business is receiving hundreds a day, how can you be sure some of these drives aren’t slipping through the cracks and not being wiped before being reused?
