Saving Young Hearts (SYH), is Florida based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in October 2006 by Dana “Andy” Anderson and Martha Lopez-Anderson in memory of their son, Sean Alexander Anderson. Sean was just 10 years old when he collapsed and died due to an undetected heart condition while rollerblading. SYH is dedicated to the prevention of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) and sudden cardiac death (SCD) in children and young adults by utlizing every resource available to provide heart screenings for early detection of risk factors and conditions that may lead to SCA/SCD, educating the public on ways that they, too, can help avert this often preventable tragedy from happening. To date, SYH has provided free heart screenings to 1,163 children and young adults; placed 97 automated external defibrillators and facilitated CPR/AED training for 1,314 adult school staff, volunteers and students. Saving Young Hearts (SYH) was established in loving memory of Sean Alexander Anderson, who in February 2004 suffered sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) while rollerblading in his neighborhood. He was just 10 years old. Although cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was started immediately, defibrillation (AED) was not available until approximately 10 minutes later when paramedics arrived. The cause of Sean’s cardiac arrest was a condition affecting the electrical system of the heart that went undetected during well-child checkups. He showed no warning signs or symptoms. SYH is dedicated to the prevention of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) and sudden cardiac death (SCD) in children and young adults. It is through your generous donations and support that we are able to provide heart screenings for early detection of risk factor and conditions that may lead to SCA/SCD, automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to youth-serving organizations and education for the public on ways that they, too, can help stop this often preventable tragedy from happening.
