About Sandusky, Ohio
Sandusky, Ohio has long been known as the home of Cedar Point Amusement Park. But recently the city of 28,000, located on the south shore of Lake Erie, has become a year-round destination for millions of tourists......!!!!!@@@@@
Rated as the 6 th best small town in America, Sandusky was founded in 1818. An important stop on the Underground Railroad during the days leading up to the Civil War, some of Sandusky’s older homes have secret rooms and passageways that were used to hide slaves as they escaped to freedom. The town has another connection to the Civil War in that historic Johnson’s Island, a prison for Confederate soldiers, was located in Sandusky Bay. Available for tours, some 200 graves remain in the federally-operated cemetery.
Tourism is indeed what drives the city of Sandusky, with Cedar Point leading the way. Since the construction of the Hotel Breakers on the peninsula in 1905, Cedar Point, voted “ Best Amusement Park on the Planet” for seven straight years, has been a vacation destination for millions of people. And with the recent addition of water parks such as Great Wolf Lodge, Castaway Bay and the Kalahari Water Park Resort, even more tourists now make their way to the city.
Sandusky’s proximity to Lake Erie makes it an ideal place for fishing, swimming or boating. The city provides any number of activities that are water-related. Charters take fishermen to the lake to catch walleye, perch, smallmouth bass and rainbow trout. Ferries take visitors to the nearby islands of Put-in-Bay and Kelley’s Island. And many of the city’s marinas offer dockage for visiting boaters.
If golfing is part of the vacation itinerary, Sandusky and the surrounding area offers several challenging courses including Sawmill Creek Lodge, Mills Creek Golf Course, Woussickett, Eagle Creek Golf Club and Thunderbird Hills Golf Club.
The city’s historic downtown area offers visitors some of the most beautiful limestone buildings in the Midwest. Many of Sandusky’s original structures have been restored, with 30 listed on the historic register, more than any other small city in the state of Ohio. The downtown area is also home to the Merry-Go-Round Museum, which houses a fully restored, working Allen Herschell Carousel as well as on-site restorers, antique tools and related items.
Sandusky’s schools serve the community with eight elementary schools, two junior high buildings, one high school and one career center. The system offers gifted programs as well as special services to its students.
Whether a vacation calls for thrills and spills at an awesome amusement park or water-themed park, a relaxing day at the beach, or a challenging round of golf, Sandusky, Ohio has it everything a tourist could ask for and more........
