We are changing the lives of high school and college students through:
Our Mission:
We hope you will join with us as we engage in the many different programs offered for children and adults. Through maritime programs we build knowledge and self- esteem for young people and offer opportunities to explore careers in the marine sciences. We help preserve lighthouses nationwide by sharing the remarkable story of a small group of community volunteers who saved our light station a quarter of a century ago. Join us as we remember the struggle and sacrifice of our veterans who gave their lives to defend our nation. Dive with us under the sea as we send museum archaeologists to explore a collection of shipwrecks rich in the multi-cultural history of our young country. Climb 219 steps to experience with us a remarkable and inspiring view of the old city from atop the tower. Our museum serves and belongs to our expanding community. We are growing and doing more every day. Please visit us often and enjoy all we have to offer.
The Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program (LAMP) is dedicated to the investigation, interpretation and better understanding of the maritime history and archaeology of St. Augustine, the "First Coast" region of Florida, and beyond. Through historical research and scientific study of shipwrecks and other maritime archaeological sites, LAMP seeks to engage local and visiting communities while exploring the dynamic story of our nation's oldest port city. Humankind has always relied on water for the transportation of people, goods and ideas, and the sea has provided sustenance and livelihoods for countless generations of maritime communities. With its defensible harbor, extensive network of inland waterways and proximity to global shipping routes, St. Augustine (founded in 1565) was well-suited to become the first permanent European settlement in the present-day United States, and thus owes its very existence to the sea.
The St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum, Inc. is a private, non-profit museum dedicated to its mission “to discover, preserve, present and keep alive the stories of the Nation's Oldest Port as symbolized by our working St. Augustine Lighthouse.
Working not only to preserve our own light station but to advocate for the preservation of other lighthouses in our state, nation and around the world, and helping to support other historic museums;
Our camps reach out to underserved and at-risk populations through a formal partnership with the St. Johns County School System. Scholarships made possible by Museum donors allow almost half our camp students to attend camps despite their economic means. Camps also reduce food stress for needy families in the summer and during school breaks. Camps also provide child care for working parents during the summer, spring and winter vacations.
The Museum opened to the public full time in May of 1994, and hired its first museum professionals as staff that same year. In 1998, it separately incorporated from the JSL as a community based museum with a non-profit, educational mission and a vision to become a distinguished center of maritime discovery. The
