began in 1970 as a simple hobby. This hobby grew over the years and developed into a full time business venture by 1990. Karl Johnson, the owner and operator of S&H Rugs Gallery, graduated from Druid Hills High School in Atlanta, Georgia in 1972. He then attended Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana for two years before transferring to Indiana University to pursue a degree in business. Karl’s interest in oriental rugs began after inheriting two rugs from his grandparents. The combination of Karl’s deep love for art and this new exposure to one of the Middle East’s greatest art forms was pivotal in the direction Karl’s business career would take. Word quickly spread of Karl's willingness to provide "in home presentations" to his clients and with an ever-expanding list of clients demanding this service; he soon found his schedule booked weeks in advance. No project is too small or too large. With a tremendous Inventory of beautiful rugs and with unparalleled personal service as a cornerstone of its business, S & H Rugs Gallery continues to expand today. S&H RUGS GALLERY, Inc. has expanded to better serve clients in the VA./MD. area. We are pleased to introduce esteemed colleague and business partner Leslie DeChaunac as head of our Richmond, VA. office. Born in northern California, Leslie was captivated early in life by the intricacies of Persian art. She studied extensively knotting techniques, symbology, and the complex use of natural dyes in antique Persian and Caucasian weavings. She met her husband Thierry in Alexandria, VA. (A city reknowned for it's antique shops in historic "Old Town Alexandria") and, in 1994, began exhibiting collections of rugs at antique shows in Washington, D.C. and the surrounding area. This business evolved into a full time venture with exhibitions up and down the East coast for promoters such as Pappabello Shows, Kramer&Associates, Jackie Sideli, and Flamingo Promotions. Due to their professional displays and magnificent inventory, Leslie & Thierry were in demand - scheduling between 35-40 shows a year. We are VERY good with color as all of our decorators will testify. We only bring rugs that will actally work with the colors already chosen. Mail us this "kit". A time needs to be scheduled in advance so that all parties involved can be present. If a husband and wife are making the decision together...then both must be present when we schedule to show the rugs "in home." This is a big process involving a lot of effort so we want to do it right and we want to do it once. A date/time should be chosen that allows enough time to sufficiently consider all the choices we will be presenting as well as allow time to ask any and all questions about the rugs. There should be no feeling of rushing the decision. This is an important decision and if done correctly will provide a lifetime of enjoyment and happiness.
