Construction is a tough business. Daunting complexity, unreasonable logistics, crazy hours and tight margins are only some of the challenges contractors face. Success often boils down to personal decisions, sacrifices and investments of time and money to achieve the myriad of small victories that deliver great projects. We get it, and we love it too. But we also recognize, for each of us, there is more to life than our work. This is what motivates us to make RedTeam as good as it can be, because keeping your projects organized and on track helps make your life easier. That’s why we do what we do.
It would be a nice story to say RedTeam started from great entrepreneurial vision, but that’s just not so. Instead, RedTeam was born from the need to solve real world problems. As an owner of a commercial construction company, I’ve had hands-on experience in all aspects of commercial construction including all delivery methods, working in public, private, institutional, retail and hospitality markets.
My first experiences in construction started when I was a kid, working as a laborer on my Dad’s projects. During hot-Florida summer breaks from college, I worked as a carpenter’s assistant framing roof decks, and during the school year I worked nights and weekends as a painter to help make ends meet. From these experiences, I learned to appreciate pride in hard work, how important it is to get things right the first time, and the deep sense of satisfaction that comes from having worked well as part of a team.
Out of college, I worked in finance, accounting and technology for several years before starting in commercial construction. The variety of this experience helped me realize the importance of integration of all aspects of one’s business as a key to success. It was from within this context that RedTeam was built from the ground up to solve the unique, real-world challenge and complexity of building a modern, multiple-office construction business enterprise.
Perhaps more important, however, has been my experience working as a contractor “in the trenches,” so to speak. I know what it’s like to win and lose in this business. I know what it takes to get project teams through a bust or an altogether bad job. I know what it’s like to be caught up in a contract dispute, years after all common sense was lost and the stakes had become all or nothing.
Nevertheless, I love the business of construction. Building is a core human endeavor, much of it timeless by nature, visceral hard work measured in lengths, widths, heights and volumes. Simply put, our job is to help construction project teams work safely and effectively, while delivering work they can be proud of, done right the first time.
At this point, we’ve been developing great software for more than 20 years, but everything we’re doing still feels new and exciting. As much as we’ve done, there is that much and more yet to do. For me, there’s nothing I’d rather be working on than helping contractors succeed.
