Hi, we are the Denbys. I’m Drew and somehow I managed to trick the incredibly gorgeous Marion to marry me,(although as always with us there is a story there too). Together we have over forty years of sales, marketing, financial planning and personnel management experience. Some of it from the corporate world in the UK but the last six years it has been from the coalface of small business ownership here on the Gulf Coast of Florida.
Back in 2009 my wife ( the good looking one in the photo), decided she wanted to start her own business and live somewhere warm. She was getting tiered of me working away from home so much and in truth, we both wanted a change. Having supported my career for thirty years it was clearly my turn to support her for a change. As with the best life changing decisions it had to be a big one. Eventually we settled on moving to Florida and my wife selected a nationally franchised maid service for her business. We took all our hard earned savings, sold the house and pretty much put it all on red.
That all changed one wet weekend when we visited an overseas property exhibition at Earls Court. Wandering around the packed hall it became clear that with so many stands to visit and speakers we wanted to listen to, without a plan we’d never get round everything. We took out the exhibition map and planned out route making sure we covered all the key topics ,visiting relevant stands and making time to listen to the important key note seminars. Without even knowing it we had turned a dream into a goal. We had turned a mindless meandering Saturday into a laser focused research mission. We had a plan.
What a mind-shift that was. In the corporate world we both knew goals have actions plans, timelines and outcomes. Wow all of a sudden we had an action plan, instead of dreaming about making a change we were planning to make a change. After that weekend we put together a structured plan that we actually wrote down. We filed it in a big Red Folder, it had to be Red, it was that important.
Anyway the long and the short of it was we found a road map to our dreams that was really a guide book in decision making. We developed simple strategies to help us rationalize the subjective and dispel the untruths that were holding us back. The Red Folder became our New Life Launch Pad.
Obviously as a small business owner some days are tougher than others and it would be a lie to say there haven’t been days when we thought it had all been a big mistake. The great thing is though the sun comes up the next day and we look at the life we have now and both know we wouldn’t change a thing.
E2 visas are not classed as permanent so you must apply for a new Social Security Card in person at a local social security office. You can make an appointment, which is a really good idea as waiting times at the Social Security offices can be long. You will need to have proof of birth and of your legal alien status. Your birth certificate and passport will usually suffice. If you have married and have a different last name then you must also provide a marriage certificate to show the maiden name and new married name. The form is then submitted and you just have to wait. Processing time vary but it can take up to 10 business days before you receive the new Social Security card.
it so are supposed to declare these items and pay the Use tax here in FL. Of course this is almost impossible to manage by each state and relies on the buyer declaring the purchase so most people don’t bother. This subject has become more relevant as Amazon and the like have exploded on the retail scene. Most online retailers only charge sales tax to customers that are having goods shipped within the state that the retailer is based. This was challenged by high street and Florida based online retailers as it made out of state online stores seem cheaper. For the state of Florida it potentially meant a drop in revenues as they could not collect sales tax from a business based in another State. This drop in revenues could have an impact on state funded projects and even the pay awards for Teachers and Law enforcement officers as they are often state employees. So watch this space.
