Chief among these are: Usurping the victim’s role and making decisions in the person’s absence , the following recommendations are offered to help you cope with the persons and behaviors harming your physical and mental health. 3. Expose the Bullying Behavior – Make sure that you obtain your company’s polices and procedures on dealing with bullying behavior and follow these to the letter. If your company doesn’t have any written policies, approach the bully and explain the situation. (Invariably, a supervisor or HR representative will ask you if you’ve addressed the matter with the bully.) Be objective and focus on the specific behaviors, rather than the person’s motivations. Give dates and instances of when the bullying behavior occurred. Tell the bully how you would like for their behavior to change. Give precise examples (e.g., “Instead of screaming at me in front of others during meetings, please tell me in a calm voice what you expect from me.”) Give the bully some time to modify their behavior. If you don’t feel that you can bring the issue to the bully’s attention (possibly because you dread being in the bully’s presence) or the intervention doesn’t help, let your supervisor know about the problem. Provide any additional documentation to that previously mentioned at this time (e.g., e-mails, the names of any witnesses to the behavioral incidents when the bullying occurred). Avoid making an emotional appeal citing the harm you’ve experienced. Rather, cite the impact of the person’s behaviors on the business’ productivity, and the cost to the business. – At this point, be open about the problem, rather than silent about it. While it might not be help you at the workplace where the bullying occurred, it will make it much more difficult for the bully to engage in such actions in the future. This is especially true if it becomes common knowledge in the workplace setting. There is a healing effect in publicly exposing the bully.
