A standard is a document, established by consensus and approved by a recognized body, which provides for common and repeated use, rules, guidelines or characteristics for activities or their results, aimed at the achievement of the optimum degree of order in a given context. Developed under a process based on the concepts of consensus, openness, due process, and balance, PMI standards provide guidelines for achieving specific project, program and portfolio management results. PMI global standards are the foundation of the profession, helping you ensure your organization’s knowledge and frameworks are up-to -date. Our standards are developed and approved through a consensus-based process that ensures all interested stakeholders can participate. This new standard will provide guidance to organizations seeking to implement project management to manage projects, programs, and portfolios in accordance with organizational practices and to achieve organizational objectives. The standard will also provide guidance on the development of organizational methodologies, i.e. project management practices that are tailored to fit an organization’s structure, culture, and practices. published in 2014. We are responding to the results of a survey conducted after publication of the practice guide that showed a high level of interest in an expanded version and acceptance of the approach presented by the guide. Our standards for project, program and portfolio management are the most widely recognized ones in the profession and are a model for project management in business and government. They are developed by thousands of PMI volunteers with experience in every type of project and provide a common language for project management around the world. More specifically, what is a project? It's a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service or result. The development of software for an improved business process, the construction of a building or bridge, the relief effort after a natural disaster, the expansion of sales into a new geographic market — all are projects. : they make project goals their own and use their skills and expertise to inspire a sense of shared purpose within the project team. They enjoy the organized adrenaline of new challenges and the responsibility of driving business results. Today, senior executives and HR managers recognize project management as a strategic competence that is indispensable to business success. They know that skilled and credentialed practitioners are among their most valuable resources. PMI is driven by a clear mission and an underlying set of values that drive how we act and influence the expectations of our stakeholders. Even as a diverse organization, we share a common set of values. Our core values are not subject to changes in the association and business environment or dictated by trends in organization management. These values are fundamental and deeply held. Through times of growth and change, our core values provide continuity and a moral compass, communicating our beliefs and guiding our behavior. The dinner was a continuation of several months of discussions between two of the men, Jim Snyder and Gordon Davis. By the conclusion of this meal, it was decided that a new organization should be formed to provide a means for project managers to associate, share information and discuss common problems. Ensuing discussions resulted in the first formal meeting at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, on 9 October 1969. The by-product of this meeting was the birth of the Project Management Institute. Shortly thereafter, articles of incorporation were filed in Pennsylvania, signed by five persons, who are officially recognized as the founders of PMI - James Snyder, Eric Jenett, Gordon Davis, A. E. "Ned" Engman and Susan C. Gallagher. Mr. Snyder is a founder of the Project Management Institute, a Fellow of the Institute, and a past Volunteer Executive Director, President and Chairman of the Board. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the PMI Educational Foundation, Treasurer of the Delaware Valley Chapter, and a member of the Editorial Review Board of Project Management Journal. Mr. Snyder, who is casually referred to as the "Father of PMI," has been awarded the PMI Man of the Year Award and is an Honorary Life Member of the Institute. He is also a founding member of the PMI Delaware Valley Chapter and the Pharmaceuticals Specific Interest Group (SIG). Mr. Snyder served as the project manager for the construction of PMI's World Headquarters in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, USA. The PMI James R. Snyder Center for Project Management Knowledge and Wisdom, located in the headquarters building, is named in his honor.
