Ray had been counseling prisoners at the Brevard Correctional Institution and mulling over what could be done, with crime just getting worse. “It just didn’t seem that my small efforts were making much of a difference. And then one day in 1994, while I was standing outside on my patio, I heard a clear voice say ‘
Deciding to find all the “clean Westerns” he could, and distribute them to local institutions, Ray became a well-known figure at flea markets and garage sales in 1994. Seeing that he was serious about helping, the jail gave him a tour. It was then that Ray saw the magnitude of the need to provide much more material of a higher quality than the romances and murder mysteries currently stored in the jail library. Prison Book Project
After two more years, in 2001, he was venturing into other countries through missionaries. By November 2002, all 50 states with an estimated 1100 facilities had received books from the Prison Book Project. Beyond anyone’s expectations, the ministry has grown to be one of the most successful prison ministries in the country.
For over 21 years Prison Book Project has been sending books into prisons with one vision in mind to Touch Lives Behind Bars. Our goals for each year have grown and adapted. In our first 2 years our goal was to put 1,000 books in the local county jail, with the Lords provision we were able to put in 38,000 books. Later we set goals for expanding the reach of the ministry and have far exceeded those as well. We are now in over 2,000 facilities in 39 countries with over 900 facilities on the waiting list. In the last 4 years we have distributed over 1.1 MILLION books!
To end 2015 well and start 2016 great we have a new goal and we are wondering if you might be able to help us. We are seeking to find 300 new friends and partners to give at least $25 per month. This would help Prison Book Project reach its newest goal of sustainability and help us move prisons off the waiting list. As always we put our faith in the Lord and our Savior Jesus Christ who has so many times helped us surpass our goals (what we can ask or imagine).
We desire to introduce prisoners to a saving relationship with Jesus Christ, help them build a firm foundation of faith, and equip them to minister to others, whether they remain in prison or are released.
Our mission is to do our part in fulfilling the words of Jesus found in Matthew 25:36,40
