POWERDMS, INC., EL SEGUNDO

Rows of metal filing cabinets, filled with important documentation, were the impetus for Josh Brown’s development of PowerDMS. When the sheriff’s office where he worked in the IT department sought accreditation, the need for paperless policy and procedure management became a personal quest. Three months later, he wowed the agency with his new creation: a product with the ability to capture electronic signatures—a user experience, despite 15 years of updates and upgrades, that is still alive in its pioneer form. “The software was very simple at first, but did that one thing really well, and that was all it took,” Josh says. “There are a few remnants left of my original code. It’s fun to know it’s still there.” Today, the company has grown to over 80 employees, who serve more than 370,000 users and over 2,500 different organizations, across numerous industries. Down to the company’s uniquely relaxed, downtown Orlando office space, Josh has built, bottled and preserved the passion and creativity instilled in PowerDMS’s culture. He’ll argue a person’s career is a huge part of their life and should be fulfilling and fun. Though his gig has gone from writing code to building a company as a CEO who strives to effortlessly inspire people, his passion for the product remains.
