On September 20, 2009 I was flying my Cirrus from St. Petersburg, FL to Pompano Beach, FL when I heard the pilot of a Piper Cherokee declare an emergency. His plane was at 3800’ over the Everglades swamp and the engine was on fire. I could not see them but I listened helplessly as the situation became worse. Four adults and a child perished that day in the worst way. Reading the news the following morning I learned that one of the passengers was a close friend. I was sad and angry and looking for answers. How could this have been avoided? I fly three different airplanes regularly. I wondered why my 1982 Cessna 414A and my 1987 Czechoslovakian fighter jet trainer (L-39C) are equipped with engine fire systems but my 2005 technologically advanced Cirrus SR22 is not? I discussed this with a friend that has >40 years experience as an A&P mechanic and the idea for our project was born. After hundreds of discussions, e-mails, phone calls and test installations our idea became a reality this year when the FAA granted us an STC for the Cirrus aircraft fire suppression system. I have been a Cirrus pilot and a member of COPA for more than 10 years and I truly believe that you cannot put a price on safety and you can never be too safe.
