Every parent desires a quality education for their child and Ronnie Greene was no exception. "I wanted the kind of education for my son Amari that would motivate him and bring out the best in him because I knew that he would rise to the challenge, Mr. Greene said. A talented saxophone player who recognized a musical interest in his son, Mr. Greene was worried that his neighborhood school could not provide the academic curriculum to meet Amari's learning style and foster his musical interests. Enter Bak Middle School of the Arts (Bak MSOA), one very committed band director named Cleve Maloon and Oxbow Carbon. "I first heard about Bak Middle School of the Arts from their band director, Cleve Maloon, Mr. Greene said. He told me about a three-year summer program that was funded through a local company named Oxbow. Cleve thought Amari would be a great candidate. I said, 'sign us up'. Mr. Maloon, a passionate, talented trombone player in his own right, wanted to help kids from economically challenged neighborhoods and rural areas of Palm Beach County have an opportunity to attend the performing arts school. "I noticed that very few kids of color were auditioning for spots, he said. Sure, I was seeing kids who had lessons since fourth grade come in and sail through their auditions but I wanted to reach out to the 'at risk' kids." The Palm Beach County School District offered 20 additional slots on the condition that the students earn their right to attend Bak MSOA through a rigorous audition process. There were 11 kids that were chosen and Amari was among them. I chose the tuba because I wanted something that could make you be heard. I felt like I had something to say," said Amari. Having made All-State, this talented student expanded his musical aptitude to include the trombone. For both father and son, the dream of a better education was made possible through the dedication and commitment of one band director and the financial support of Oxbow Carbon. Bak MSOA is an A rated school and the largest magnet middle school in Palm Beach County, Florida serving 1,360 students. Recognized as one of the 25 most generous people in America by The Chronicle of Philanthropy, William 'Bill' Koch, founder and CEO of Oxbow Carbon LLC, has turned one of his dreams into reality. On September 7, 2011, a group of high school students, representing 19 communities throughout South Florida, attended their first day of classes at Oxbridge Academy in West Palm Beach, Florida. The opening doors marked a longstanding dream come true for Mr. Koch a desire to bring high level education to kids who desire it. One of Oxbridge Academys principal missions is to make education available to all qualified students. "My father grew up in a small town in East Texas. His family didn't have much, but what my dad lacked in financial resources, he made up for in intellectual curiosity, Mr. Koch said. Eight decades ago, a local Texas businessman reached out and helped send my father to engineering school at Massachusetts Institute of Technology where his curiosity blossomed. My grandparents could never have afforded MIT. But the education that my father received there helped him develop the skills needed to create a cheaper method of turning oil into gasoline." In Mr. Koch's view, providing students with the type of life-defining educational experience Oxbridge Academy offers not only benefits young people and their families, it also presents an extraordinary opportunity to advance our communities - on both a local and global scale. Oxbow believes by combining sustainability with good business practices we have the ability to improve the health, safety and quality of life of our employees and the communities where they live.
