Ormond Beach is located in the east-central part of Florida, just 50 miles south of historic St. Augustine and 60 miles from both Orlando and the Kennedy Space Center. Originally called New Britain after the Connecticut home of early settlers, it was changed in 1880 to honor an area plantation owner. Two of the earliest residents built a modest home here and rented rooms to travelers and other potential settlers and Ormond Beachs destiny as an oceanside retreat was born. Once the home of John D. Rockefeller, Ormond Beach quickly earned a reputation as a first-class resort town with an exceptional quality of life and this standard of living continues today. Rockefellers former summer home, The Casements, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is now a cultural center for the city. Home to 37,000 residents, the town of Ormond Beach offers residents and visitors a peaceful, elegant setting with easy access to many of Floridas top theme parks and tourist hot spots. Its near just about everything in Central Florida and is bisected by the major arteries of I-95, which runs south to Miami, and I-4, which takes you west to Orlando, Disney World and on to Tampa. Ormond Beach is considered part of the greater Daytona Beach Metro Area, and its location on the northern border of Daytona Beach provides plenty of excitement and a wealth of diversity. Ormond Beachs Leisure Services Department was named one of the top four in the country in 2002. Its near perfect climate and senior citizen complex that offers activities and programs designed especially for the elderly population is attracting many seniors to Ormond Beach as a retirement community, as well. The community of Ormond Beach is separated by the Halifax River on the west, and bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the east. This location, in addition to many pristine lakes, forests and streams, makes it an ideal location for a myriad of outdoor activities. White sand beaches for sunning and relaxation, water and jet skiing, surfing, scuba diving, fishing, windsurfing, tennis and golf. You name it and Ormond Beach has it. The scenic Tomoka State Park is located just three miles north of town and is known for its camping, fishing and boating. Its also the site of a Timucuan Indian settlement discovered in 1605 by Spanish explorers and has numerous walking and biking paths. Nearby, the Bulow Creek State Park preserves one of the largest remaining stands of Southern Live Oak Forests along the East Coast of Florida. Ormond Beach is also known as the Birthplace of Speed, due to the automotive beach races on the wide, smooth sand, which began here in the early 1900s. Each Thanksgiving weekend, an annual show celebrates this legacy with an Antique Car Show and Parade and a gaslight parade. The community hosts many other special events and festivals throughout the year, such as their festive Independence Day celebrations, including the Jazz Matazz Annual Event, which showcases national and international musicians.
