Mission and History Mission: Shannon Calhoun, founder and CEO of New Directions, New Ideas, LLC has 24 years of experience working in the business, government, education and nonprofit sectors. Her areas of expertise include grant writing, program evaluations, survey design, professional development programs, and business plans. Ms. Calhoun began to develop the knowledge and skills she uses today when she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology from Florida State University and a Master’s degree in Demography from Florida State University’s Center for Demography and Population Health. Ms. Calhoun’s professional career began as a Legislative Analyst for the Florida Legislative Committee on Intergovernmental Relations and this experience provided her with a broad understanding of the interrelationships between local, state and national levels of government. Working for the legislature helped her to gain valuable insight regarding how legislation impacts businesses, nonprofits, and school districts. In 1992 Ms. Calhoun’s career shifted toward building a family business, where she provided bookkeeping services for small businesses and developed the accounting firm’s Quality Control Manual. She also assisted with financial audits of nonprofit organizations receiving federal grants. In 2005, Ms. Calhoun began working in the private sector as an independent consultant and writing grants for school districts and nonprofit organizations. New Directions, New Ideas was founded in 2009 by Ms. Calhoun and since then has continued to expand her client list and services. Ms. Calhoun’s program evaluation services have provided her with the opportunity to conduct over 100 elementary, middle, and high school site visits and participate in over 50 professional development trainings throughout the state of Florida. In addition to building a consulting business, Ms. Calhoun has served as a volunteer for the Florida Action For Healthy Kids Executive Committee since 2005. This national nonprofit organization provides schools with resources to improve student health. In 2006, she was instrumental in writing legislation, the Student Health Promotion Act, in partnership with the Greater Southeast Affiliate of the American Heart Association, the Florida Coordinated School Health Partnership, and Florida Action for Healthy Kids. Hi, my name is Shannon Calhoun and I’d like to tell you a little bit about my company and myself. Since 2005, I’ve been fortunate to work with many people who share the same passion and interests I have for health and fitness, outdoor recreation, and high quality educational opportunities. I enjoy working side-by-side with my clients and seeing their organization, project, or business from the perspective that it is my own and I want it to succeed. My primary goal is to foster growth in every client’s organization and assist each one with meeting its own goals. I believe nothing is impossible, after all, the word itself says, “I’m possible!” I admire the words of Henry David Thoreau who said, “Go confidently in the direction of our dreams and live the life you’ve imagined.” This is the vision for my company, New Directions, New Ideas, LLC. For my past and current clients, I want to say “thank you” for sharing your thoughts, concerns, and dreams with me and letting me be part of growing your business/nonprofit.
