New Directions has two student tracks, transitional services for typical young adults with unique challenges (young adults who are struggling with traditional issues common amongst 18-25 year olds) and one for special needs students who need a program to help them transition into independence. A tax deduction for medical expenses for the tuition paid to New Directions for Young Adults, Inc may be available. In accordance with IRS regulations, a medical deduction is allowed for tuition costs when a school meets the definition of a “special school.” Tax advisors should be consulted regarding the availability of this deduction. Students usually have the option of rooming with one to two other students within the program which helps offset the rental costs. Most students live in a two bedroom apartment with two master bedrooms each with their own private bathroom. Washer and dryers are included in all apartments. All students have weekly schedules and specific goals identified on their individual service plan (ISP). Depending on individual needs, some students are provided with weekly checklists posted inside their apartments with daily chores/routines/nutritional guidelines/medication reminders. During every LMS (Life Management Skills) session, an evaluation stating what was accomplished and what still needs to be worked on is completed. About New Directions for Young Adults The goal of New Directions is to prepare young adults to live independent lives. Our program is comprehensive and client-centered, providing an individualized service plan for each participant. Support is provided through a multi-disciplinary clinical approach, and incorporates educational, vocational, independent living, health, social and recreational goals.  New Directions supports students with executive functioning deficits due to a variety of developmental and/or psychological disorders who are willing to participate in the program and capable of learning the skills needed to live independently. Services can be gradually tapered to allow students to exercise the independence they have learned in the program. . Andrew Rubin (Ph.D. PSYC ’01) is the executive director and founder of New Directions for Young Adults, Inc. and chairman of the board for the International Society for Autism (ISA, isaresearch.org), a nonprofit organization funding scholarships for programs serving young adults with a range of psychopathology. In addition, ISA actively engages in research on evidenced-based treatment interventions. New Directions for Young Adults (NDFYA.com) is a multidisciplinary transitional living program that helps young adults learn the skills needed to live independently. We have two program locations, Pleasant Hill, CA and Deerfield Beach, FL.  Our clients live independently in their own apartments and receive customized supports from a variety of providers including Psychologists. Other services provided by New Directions include life management skill training (cooking, cleaning, etc.), financial skills management, academic support, vocational counseling, social skills training, social activities, and more.
