Newly immigrated, alone and unable to communicate in English, Mirek could only communicate with the other Czech refugees who he escaped with. One of them was an artist named Jaroslav Hovadik. Jaroslav taught Mirek about the local artists in Canada and in Europe as well as the United States. He also taught Mirek everything he know about all the different print making processes and techniques like lithography, linoleum block printing, etching, etc. Mirek started a small business for himself selling Hovadik’s prints under the modest acronym I. G. P. Mirek moved to New York City and also Greenwich, CT during the late 80s and 90s when he began dealing in postwar and contemporary art selling and exhibiting artists like Andy Warhol, David Hockney, Frank Stella, Richard Diebenkorn, Joan Mitchell, Mark Rothko, Roy Lichtenstein, De-Kooning, James Rosenquist, Sam Francis, and other Pop artists and Abstract-expressionists who were popular at the time but hadn’t yet reached the multi-million-dollar level that their works sell for today. In 2000, Mirek began dealing with original paintings and gouaches from Marc Chagall’s estate after befriending Swiss businessman, Jean-Francois Gobbi.
