"We'd love to say that we had a master plan but honestly, our distribution started when we walked into a local boutique that sold vintage clothing named Sodafine located in the Fort Greene section of Brooklyn, NY". As soon as the girls from Sodafine started selling Miss Jessie's curly hair products , they became overwhelmed with the Miss Jessie customer who traveled far and wide to purchase product at this retail outlet. The Branch sisters then realized that they needed to place the products in another retail outlet. Miko, a longtime fan of Ricky's (an eclectic beauty emporium with locations throughout NYC) decided that Miss Jessie's needed to be carried by this cool chain she loved. Armed with the courage of the growing popularity of the brand, Miko dragged Titi into the store and spoke to the stock person. She said, "We have a product line that would be perfect for Ricky's and I want you to carry it". "He gave us the name of a manager, we sent in the products and immediately got the call that Ricky's wanted to carry the line. At the time, the only curly product line that they carried was the ever popular Devacurl line" Titi laments. curly hair products . Initially, Miss Jessie's curly hair products were intended for the tighter, coarser ethnic that was being overlooked by the lighter weight products on the market at the time. "What we found was that Miss Jessie's line had crossed all ethnic categories. Any curly you know whether you're Black, White, Latina, Italian, Indian, Mediterannean, Jewish or anything in between can use a Miss Jessie's product. These products were truly texture based as opposed to race specific," Miko shares. The company’s line grew to include Rapid Recovery Treatment™, Quick Curls™, Crème de la Creme™ (which won the 2009 Redbook MVP Award), Crème de la Curl™, Stretch Silkening Creme™, Curly Pudding Unscented™ and Super Slip Sudsy Shampoo™ but growth did not come without challenges. "When we first started, the biggest obstacle was the uncertainty of whether people would actually buy the product," Miko and Titi recalled. "When a line is new, you really have no idea how it will be received." When asked what is their biggest obstacle now, Miko and Titi laugh, "Trying to get products out fast enough!" segment and is excited to keep bringing out new products! is the Co-Founder and CEO of Miss Jessie’s products for curly hair. Miko and Titi revolutionized and revitalized the entire hair care market by being the first to develop original and ground breaking hair products designed to enhance and enrich every type of textured curly hair for people of every ethnic background. They named the product line after their do it yourself and fiercely independent paternal grandmother – Miss Jessie. The Miss Jessie’s brand was born in Brooklyn, NY out of necessitate. In 2000, Miko had just had a baby boy and she quickly realized that bathing a splashing new born was not good for maintaining her straight styled hair. So, she began wearing her hair natural and curly – and Titi followed behind. They loved the look (as did their salon clients), but it was difficult – if not impossible – to find any products, anywhere that were designed for maintaining and styling naturally curly hair. Faced with this problem, the sisters looked to their grandmother for inspiration and wondered what she would do. The solution was simple. Make your own product, because that is what Miss Jessie would have done! Miko’s finger print is evident in every aspect of the Miss Jessie’s brand from the packaging and marketing to the colors and smells of the award winning products, including favorites like Baby Buttercreme, Pillow Soft Curls, Curly Pudding, Quick Curl and newest addition Leave in Condish and Multi Cultural Curls. About Titi: Co-Founder of the Salon and Miss Jessie's Natural Hair Care Products After high school, Titi enrolled at the University of Maryland, where she earned a degree in Consumer Economics. From an early age, Titi’s father always ingrained the importance of controlling your own destiny and she was able to express this through entrepreneurship. Straight out of college, she opened a cleaning business with her sister Miko. This proved to be difficult work so Titi left the business and got a job at WABC-TV as the assistant to the News Director. Meanwhile, Titi’s sister Miko was getting her hustle on from their shared loft in Brooklyn as a freelance hairstylist and this sparked Titi’s desire for independence again. In 1996 Titi opened up an artist repping agency called Icon Creative Artists where she represented photographers. Some of her clients included hair and celebrity photographers which gave her entrée into the hair business. Those celebrities included, Mary J Blige, Garcelle Beauvais and Dru Hill to name a few. As a start-up business, no job was too small for Titi. She found herself creating "the work" for the photographer by going to the salons to get "the work" in order for her to get paid. In addition, Titi also arranged photo shoots for hair product companies. Titi and Miko’s world became closely intertwined as they discussed their day and realized they were in the same business. Their "Aha" moment came and it occurred to the two sisters that they needed to work together. Titi took Miko on as her client and represented her. By far, her most successful client became Miko. She got editorial work her sister and then they landed an advertising campaign with Ashley Stewart. With the revenue they received from the campaign, they pooled their money together and opened up their very first salon in the Boerum Hill section of Brooklyn in 1997. They named it Curve Salon.
