We were established by local rural leaders in 1936 with the assistance of the Rural Electrification Administration. Co-ops like Menard Electric brought electricity to the rural areas when investor-owned utilities would not serve them. Over 80 years later, electric co-ops like us are the primary providers of electricity in the rural areas of downstate Illinois and across this nation. Today we serve rural and urban residences as well as commercial, agricultural and industrial businesses. serve more than 10,800 meters over more than 2,590 miles of line within approximately 2,400 square miles in Cass, Logan, Macon, Mason, Menard, Morgan, Sangamon and Tazewell counties. We serve approximately 4 members per mile of line. Each person receiving electricity from Menard Electric is a member of the cooperative. As such, they are part owner of the co-op and control it through the election of nine directors who represent districts throughout our service territory. Each membership has one vote.
