We distribute our wines to retailers in 25 states as well as having a well-stocked tasting room & wine store, including wines, gift items and wine making supplies in the Silverton community of Cincinnati. Established in 1890, Meier’s Wine Cellars has been producing and suppling award winning wines and juices for over a century! We offer a friendly and welcoming environment in our store and tasting room. With a knowledgeable staff Meier’s Wine Cellars is not only a wonderful place to taste a variety of Ohio made wines , but an enjoyable place to uncover some local history. Our mission is to produce high quality wines from American grown grapes. Our wine list features over 30 wines including dessert, table , sparkling and fruit wines. We produce 11 flavors of sparkling/still non-alcoholic juices under John C. Meier Juice Company label. Company Overview Ohio’s history in winemaking took root along the Ohio River near Cincinnati more than 100 years ago. Meier’s Wine Cellars, Inc. began in the late 1800’s as a small grape juice business. John Michael Meier once grew his grapes on land now known as the Kenwood Towne Center north of Cincinnati. His son, John Conrad Meier, discovered in 1895 a method of bottling fresh grape juice and formed the John C. Meier Grape Juice Company, Inc. Around the turn of the century, land was purchased in Silverton, Ohio along the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad line. During prohibition, the company prospered making sparkling Catawba grape juice. The company returned to making wine after prohibition’s repeal in 1933. In 1938, the company’s articles of incorporation were formally amended and the company was renamed Meier’s Wine Cellars, Inc. In 1941, land was purchased on North Bass Island (Isle St. George) in Lake Erie and most the company’s grape needs were met from those vineyards. Over the next 35 years, the company continued to prosper extending their winemaking skills by producing table wines, sparkling wines, dessert wines, vermouths, and carbonated grape juice. In 1976, the company was purchased by Paramount Distillers, Inc. Cleveland, Ohio and continues today as Ohio’s oldest and largest winery producing wines and juices from Native American grape varieties. Grapes are no longer grown on North Bass Island but are purchased from independent growers in Ohio, New York and Pennsylvania. The company is best known for its #44 Cream Sherry and produces over 45 kinds of wines and a premium line of sparkling non-alcoholic grape juices. Meier’s is located 1.5 miles south of the Kenwood Mall on Plainfield Road, Silverton, Ohio. Our retail store has a wide selection of our many wines, sparkling juices ( free samples daily), as well as custom wine gift baskets and wine related gift items. We also have an excellent selection of home wine making supplies. We offer daily wine tastings at $1 for a one ounce pour. You may build your own tasting or choose from one of our pre-designed tasting flights! We also offer a cheese and cracker try to help complete you tasting experience! Meier’s has nearly 40,000 sq. feet of production, bottling, warehouse and office space at our corporate headquarters located in Silverton, Ohio. Our facility includes three separate bottling lines as well as a state-of-the-art quality control laboratory. Meier’s is located on a six acre site just north of the Cincinnati city limits. The winery has bonded winery premises and distilled spirits plant. The operation can process, blend and bottle a variety of products including table wines, dessert wines, vermouths, and sparkling wines. The bottling plant has three modern bottling lines and the unique ability to carbonate and pasteurize sparkling flavored water and juice products. In addition, the winery has rail siding for handling rail cars to compliment its bulk storage and warehouse facilities.
