William McDonough is a globally recognized leader in sustainable development and is the founding principle of the firm. After establishing William McDonough Architects in New York in 1981, he later moved the practice, which became William McDonough + Partners, to Charlottesville, Virginia, in 1994, when he became Dean of the School of Architecture at the University of Virginia. McDonough is the architect of many recognized flagships of sustainable design, including the Ford Rouge truck plant in Dearborn, Michigan; the Adam Joseph Lewis Center for Environmental Studies at Oberlin College; and NASA’s “space station on Earth,” Sustainability Base, one of the most innovative facilities in the federal portfolio, among others. In 1996, McDonough received the Presidential Award for Sustainable Development, and in 2003 he earned the first U.S. EPA Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award for his work with Shaw Industries. In 2004, he received the National Design Award for exemplary achievement in the field of environmental design. He is Alastair has practiced architecture in San Francisco, Washington, D.C., New York City, and Los Angeles for over 25 years. He has extensive project management experience in retail and residential design, as well as commercial base building and interior architecture. Since joining William McDonough + Partners in 2004, Alastair has led several key projects in the Bay Area and in The Netherlands. Alastair is a licensed general contractor and co-owned a design build firm prior to joining WM+P. This knowledge of construction practices and pricing adds a valuable practical perspective to his strong design leadership. José’s design leadership spans over 15 years of professional experience in the realization of diverse architectural typologies at multiple scales that include award-winning commercial, mixed-use, multi-family and single family custom residential, academic, hospitality, aviation, and urban design projects throughout the U.S. and EU. His ability to lead teams towards materializing primary concepts into unique solutions that embody project goals while integrating site, form, and systems has led to many successful collaborations. In addition to leading the design of multiple architectural projects at WM+P, José has also directed the design of products and objects with McDonough Innovation. As a Lecturer in Architecture at the University Of Virginia School Of Architecture, José has taught core design studios and lectured, researched, and written on issues of prefabrication, responsive envelopes, and the relationship between sustainability and form. John is an award-winning designer who relishes working on large, complex programs and master planning projects to achieve a swift and effective design resolution. His unique combination of talents has played a crucial role in shaping the firm’s transformation of land-planning and development processes. John has been with the firm since 1994 and has contributed to the design of several of the firm’s groundbreaking designs. He is currently leading the design for the Hero Motorcorp Garden Factory and Global Parts Center in India. Roger is a director, project manager, and architect with over 30 years of experience in the architecture profession. He joined William McDonough + Partners in 1994, and has led many of the firm’s industrial projects, including the Herman Miller Greenhouse, Ford Rouge Truck Plant, Frito Lay Distribution Center, and restoration of the historic Dearborn Glass Plant at Ford. More recently he led the design teams for Hero MotoCorp’s Neemrana factory, Jaipur research and development center; and factories under construction in Gujarat, India and Jessore, Bangladesh. A recent signature project is the Method South Side Soapbox factory and Gotham Greens greenhouse in the Pullman district of Chicago. He has also led project teams on research and educational buildings, most notably the Environmental Studies Center at Oberlin College, the Creve Coeur Child Development Center, a renovation of the University of Michigan School of Natural Resources and Environment, the Ferrer Grupo R&D building in Barcelona, and currently a classroom and administration building for the Universidad EAN, in Bogotá, Colombia. Roger has expertise in green roofs and buildings to house food production, technologies which have been featured in many of his projects. He speaks and writes frequently on environmental sustainability and the work of the firm. Recent talks include: Habitat Futura Architecture Biennial Nov. 2012; keynote address for the Green Roofs for Healthy Cities ‘Gray to Green’ conference, Toronto, Apr. 2015; keynote for the Colombian Green Building Council, Mar. 2016; and a presentation to the Cincinnati AIA, Apr. 2016. Roger is a longstanding member of the AIA, USGBC, and Green Roofs for Healthy Cities (GRHC) organizations. At GRHC he has served on committees to write study guides and set up an accreditation testing program. He recently was selected to serve on a Community Advisory Council in Albemarle County, Virginia. Celeste joined the firm earlier this year and has an extensive background in sustainable architecture having worked as a graphic designer/marketing coordinator for Philadelphia-based firms for over 15 years. Celeste oversees graphics, branding, communications materials, and the firm’s visual identity. She also works with Mr. McDonough to prepare presentations for international audiences. She is a LEED Green Associate and graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Graphic Design from Drexel University.
