The Nature Preserve and Bird Sanctuary project is the Marco Eagle Sanctuary Foundation’s plan to preserve the site currently known as the Eagle Sanctuary located at 665 Tigertail Court, Marco Island Florida. The development will include a Nature Learning Center where the public can experience the natural habitat of pre-development Marco Island while also preserving the home of a nesting pair of American Bald Eagles and many other species of birds, animals, and flora native to the region. The Marco Island Nature Preserve and Bird Sanctuary promises to be an Eco-destination and will help to re-cast the environment as a high priority for Marco Island and its residents. This will add a positive new facet to the profile of our decidedly developed community. Ecotourism is defined as, “The practice of touring natural habitats in a manner that has a low-impact on the environment, contributes to the local economy and fosters environmental education.” This is the very essence of the new Marco Island Nature Preserve and Bird Sanctuary. Marco Eagle Sanctuary Foundation Mission Statement The Marco Eagle Sanctuary Foundation (MESF) is a not-for-profit 501 (C) (3) organization founded in 2010. Our primary objective is the preservation of the American Bald Eagles and their habitats on Marco Island, Florida. Our Mission is to work with the citizens of Marco Island as well as, City, County, and State organizations to guarantee the safety of the active Bald Eagle nest on the Marco Island Nature Preserve on Tigertail Ct. We will work to educate the community about the importance of these majestic birds and how to expand the bird population on Marco Island once known as an” Eagle Sanctuary.” Marco Eagle Sanctuary Foundation Story The Marco Eagle Sanctuary Foundation (MESF) began in 2010 as a small group of Marco Island, FL citizens concerned about how the city and some developers looked at the importance of the Eagles now nesting on an 11.6 acre piece of property located at 665 Tigertail Ct, Marco Island Fl. This property had a long history of different opinions from community leaders, and developers as to how the property should be used, none put the Eagles as an important part of the solution. Since at least 2003 a pair of American Bald Eagles have been returning to their nest on the Preserve and producing new fledglings. Every September they begin their nest rebuilding process for the upcoming nesting season, sometimes bringing youngsters from the previous year with them. Any major development of this property would have ended their long time nesting location. Since our involvement our message that the Eagles and their habitat must be protected, the Collier County School District and their school board (owners of the property) has had a positive dialog with us and the community about the Eagles and ended in MESF signing a lease purchase agreement for the property in 2015. This step was one that ensures the protection of the Eagles and the creation of the Marco Island Nature Preserve. To protect Marco Island’s eagles and their habitats it took the Marco Eagle Sanctuary Foundation, the citizens Marco Island, and the Collier County School District working together for the right solution to protect these birds. Our job is to be sure that all community organizations and citizens have the same goal, to keep one of the last green spaces left on the Island free from over development and protect our heritage as an Eagle Sanctuary. We hope to achieve this goal with emphasis on educational projects on the importance of the preservation of undeveloped land parcels and the wildlife that live there.
